gastroscopy and breastfeeing, drugs dangerous?

Hi,

I'm having a gastroscopy on Tuesday and I bf my 5 month old ds. I have checked with the hospital that I can have him with me before and immediately after the procedure, and they are happy for me to feed as I see fit. Problem is, I think that's a cunning way of getting out of researching what I should do.

Anyone had similar day procedures while bf'ing. Did you have the drugs, did they affect milk supply, ability to latch and position etc. If you refused the drugs - how bad is it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've had the gastroscopy now, and its a good job I got my story straight, because when I got there the consultant announced I couldn't feed for 6 hours. What baby can wait 6 hours?

However I got the names of the drugs and the other staff said that I could feed straight away. However they requested I didn't do it in front of the consultant. Shame as he will still be giving his next bf patient the wrong information.

Write to him, bobthebaby, with your evidence. There is no reason why a specialist in gastric surgery should be telling mothers what to do about breastfeeding anyway....this is a paediatric concern and it's the mother's decision on whether she follows the advice. No reason, either, for him to give the same old misleading advice to others - you can stop him!!! Babies undergo ops themselves, and get far, far more of whatever anaesthetic agent is used than would appear in the milk.

Thanks Tiktok. I will also write to the hospital as I think they should have a bf policy (private hospital so no maternity ward to do one for them.)
