Introducing formula at 5 months - how to go about it

I had originally planned to take 9 months off work but due to circumstances beyond my control I am having to return in a few weeks time when DD will be 23 weeks.

I am very lucky that my mum will be providing childcare for me and I will only be returning part time however I will have to introduce formula for my mum to give her whilst I am at work.

I am unable to see anyway round this - and it has left me feeling a bit sad - but I was hoping for some advice or experiences on the best way to go about this and what I might expect. (sorry if any of the following questions seem obvious or silly Smile)

Would it be better to start now and introduce a bottle gradually rather than all at once over a few days?

Does it matter which formula I use?

Will I be able to continue breastfeeding in the mornings and evenings/nights (or is there no point)?

Will it be painful stopping breastfeeding?

TIA

Why can't you express if you don't want to give formula? Your work have to give you time, space and facilities (e.g. a fridge) to enable you to express at work if needed.

Thanks for answering japhrimel.

I have tried expressing both with an electric and manual pump (also by hand) and never get more than 2oz at a time. Also my work isn't office based, I am out in the community for most of the day and travelling around in the car so even if I could express a decent amount I would have the problem of storage.

Assuming you don't want to pump, best to cut donw one day time feed at a time, maybe start a week before you go back.

Even if you are out and about they should still have to provide facilities for pumping.

Cut the mid morning feed first etc. It has never been painful for me but have done it gradually each time.
