Is it possible for a bf baby to be overweight?

I don't think she is/it is possible (when feeding on demand), but DH and some other family members are worried as DD has gone up from 9th to above 75th centile in 4 months.

She is bf on demand and having some solids via BLW (but we've been BLW for less than a month and the weight gain has been going on for much longer). Personally I'm not concerned but I want to reassure DH, he's now going on about her not being able to walk cos she's too fat (when she was on the 9th centile for the first 3 months he was worried she was too small!).

She does crawl and is quite active, so I would expect her to burn off some calories like that. If she is too big, how could I get her to bf less? I can't imagine she'd take kindly to me refusing feeds...

Please help!

Nice baby.
Don't worry Fink, DD2 was above 99%, peads said she was overfed too with BF then FF, (not Hmm), and she is trying to walk at 7 months so the fat bum and tighs don't really bother her!

I think it's only fair to point out that plenty of breastfed babies are skinny and very healthy, strong and well. In fact, most of the bf babies I know fit this description and the ff babies on the whole tend to be fatter. I fear this thread gives the impression that a chubby baby is the goal. Obviously, a healthy, stong, well baby is what we're aiming for.

I used to wonder if it could really be true that you can't overfeed a bf baby. But I do think it is the case. They take what they need and, as others have said, crawling/walking sorts out the calories in/calories out equation and they all find their natural place on the "chart".

Go with it Smile
