I'm 6 weeks pregnant and am sure my milk is already drying up. During the day, my 14 month old now wants to nurse at least hourly if not more fequently. He only does so for a few minutes at a time, I think because there is not much milk. I seem to only have a decent amount of milk first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. He used to nurse only about 4 times per day.

I'm now worried that DS is not getting enough. He has also eaten loads the last couple days. Have started offering small bits of soy milk (yes, I know about the fat content...) and goats milk in cup. He accepts a bit, but not much, and it certainly doesn't discourage him from wanting to suckle frequently. I was planning to wean gradually through the pregnancy - completely weaning by halfway through, but feel I am being forced to do it sooner, and quickly. DS is very persistent though. Don't know how he is going to manage. He is getting a bit frustrated. :-(

Did anyone else loose their milk this early in pregnancy? How did you wean? How did you settle your lo? I feel DS is a bit too young to understand when I say there is no more mommy milk right now.

Mrslionheart - Congrats on your pg! I've nursed through two pgs and with both my milk has dried up at 14 weeks but come back as colostrum at 24/26 weeks. DD1&2 have both nursed as though there has been milk (i.e. frequency/duration of 'feeds') but I supplemented with cows' milk.

DD1 would have been about 15 m/o when milk dried up first time (and 3y/o the 2nd time) and DD2 would have been about 16/17 m/o.

As I never intended to wean whilst pg I can't give you any advice on that front but I did suffer from sore nipples that meant I introduced time limits to the 'feeds'.

With DD1 we nursed for the length of time it took to read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' at bed time otherwise she would nursed for ages, with DD2 I would say 'all done bah now' as a cue for her to finish.

Would your DS understand nursing until book/song ended, or only nursing if you sat in a particular chair? Kellymom.com has a whole section on nursing & pg and the book 'Adventures in Tandem nursing' by Hilary Flowers has good advice too.
