Help - how can I keep my baby awake to feed long enough?

My baby is 16 days old and unfortunately 8 of his first days were spent in and out of hospital (due to me, not him). Initially breastfeeding was going great but I am now (a) worried he isn't getting enough hindmilk as his poos are green and (b) that I can't seem to get enough milk into him at late evening feed (11ish) as he wakes up hungry but falls asleep on boob about 15mins later and nothing at all will rouse him. until 5 days ago he was feeding every 3 hours during the day and 4 hourly at night, but he is now down to 2 hourly at night! I am so worried there is something wrong with my milk or my feeding. He has also had extremely painful wind which I think is due to me being on hefty IV antibiotics. I am taking a probiotic and also have started him on colief.
Can anyone offer me any advice? I am worried I will have to give up. Thank you :)

Morning,

Tickle his feet or ribs?

Wash his face? (cool water)

Sharp puff of breath in his face?

Change nappy (Or pretend to if already done?)

Strip down to nappy?

My daughter was the same for a couple of weeks. She was born 2 weeks early and was hopelessly sleepy. Now at 6 weeks she's thriving and a bugger to get her to sleep! Spent the first 2 weeks wishing she's wake and now spend time wishing she would!

Contrary little things aren't they?

Good luck

Morning, firstly congrats on your LO! Smile

It sounds like you're doing a great job - it's natural to worry about quantity of milk, especially as you can't see what's going in, but remember their tummies are so small - if he's feeding every 2 hours, you're getting wet and dry nappies and he's gaining weight I'd say he's getting enough.

As far as keeping him awake goes, as well as the suggestions above I'd add running a finger down his spine, and try googling breast compression - this worked for me when my DS kept dozing off in the early days.
We had bad wind too which to be honest hasn't abated much (my DS is nearly 6 months now), but it didn't hinder his feeding or growth at all - we used Colief too which did limit his symptoms I reckon...

Good luck, and keep going; you're doing great!
