put the shield in a hot cup of water, take it out, give it a bit of a shake to cool and then turn the nipple part slightly inside out (half way) and then place it on the breast and pop it on. The vacuum from the inside out shield will pull your nipple into the shield and seal it. Having the shield wet from the water will also make it 'stick' to the breast.

Not sure if you will understand what i am saying though.... cause i can't explain it very well without showing you

My daughter (13 weeks) has never latched on without a shield despite many attempts on my part. I have used Nuk, Avent and Mam. I found Avent completely rubbish, Nuk ok, and Mam excellent. They are the only ones I use now. There's no messing with them, just pop them on over the nipple. Try to align the cut-out with the baby's nose and off you go.

I read a lot of stuff about shields and panicked quite a bit as a lot of it is very negative but I think this may refer to older shields which were made of rubber rather than silicone. While feeding without them is definitely preferable, the shields have allowed me to feed my (very stubborn) daughter for 3 months and my supply doesn't seem to have been affected.

I was given medela shields 20mm by my HV when my dauhgter was 1 week old and they changed everything for us and she is now a very happy 9 week old. My brilliant HV told me not to listen to people saying I would have to give them up and just to carry on as she is putting weight on nicely and we are both so much happier! I bought one from our breastfeeding clinic initially and then 2 spares from ebay. I don't even bother turning them halfway inside out now to put them on, just pop them in place and my daughter feeding pulls the nipple out.

I used to squeeze a little milk into them firt so that baby tasted the milk, think the idea was that it encouraged him. they were a Godsend for me.
