Are you still in hospital? Or at home?

Ds1 swallowed some stuff (sorry, it was 14 years ago and I can't remember what it was called) while in labour and also wouldn't feed very well to start with. In the end theysort of sucked it out through a tube, I think.

Gah. Feel totally useless. I didn't want you to go unanswered though. Hopefully someonemuch better qualified will be along shortly.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl though!

My DD slept most of her first da and she was the same..kept seeming like she was choking.
It was mucus..she just kept coughing it up all the time.I understand its normal.

pinkmagic1 · 20/08/2010 23:23

Congratulations about your daughter! Like others have said, it sounds like she is just very mucusy. My 2nd was exactly the same as you described but it cleared after a day or 2 and her appetite improved. Also new babies are normally only interested in sleep for the first day, make the most of it!
Try not to worry too much although I know its easier said than done.

Congratulations. You are doing very well to be on here alreadySmile
Are you in hospital still? If so ask the midwife to listen to babies chest. If any mucus is present they will be able to hear it.

Most babies sleep alot to begin with, they are knackered. She has fed so thats good.
If baby is sleeping in a moses basket prop up the head end so baby isnt lying flat. Dont forget to keep her on her back.
You can phone the ward where you delivered if you are worried. they still have a duty of care until the first home visit of your midwife team.

Congratulations! My DD slept for most of the first 2 days and when awake was very chokey. We got a fright when she started to choke but we were reassured that it was just mucus. She did spit up mucus, but I think that it was more yellow than brown. Agree with ronshar, if your worried give your community midwife team a call at the hospital and just explain whats been happening. Poeple have different opinions on this but when I gave birth I was encouraged to waken my DD every 4 hours to encourage her to feed while she was so sleepy.

I know its hard, but try to get some sleep yourself while she is sleeping. I found it really hard to sleep as I was so worried in case my DD choked/was sick/cried and I didn't hear her...really I was worried about EVERYTHING!

Yep welcome to motherhood. My eldest is 10 and I still worryGrin

I agree, it is mucus making her 'choke', you'll probably find she'll have a huge pukey session and that will be the end of it. However, if you are at all worried then call your midwife and get her to check your baby over.

When I had DS 10 weeks ago, the ward that night was full of babies making that gaggy noise and then you could hear their poor mothers (me included) having to completely change them lol!

As for the feeding, a lot of newborns do nothing but sleep for at least the first 24 hrs, they do not need to take a lot on board milk-wise for the first few days, they have good reserves Smile

Congratulations, enjoy! Grin

Congratualtions :o

When my DD was born she swallowed alot of mucus and seemed to be choking all the time. I kept panicking, as she didnt really want to feed either.

The midwives wanted me to stay in hospital an extra day to ensure she took a proper feed before i went home.

She was also gaging all the time as icklejess has said and I had to change her countless times.

They advised me to elevate the cot or moses basket once home to help with the mucus, so to either put some books under one end of (the head end) the cot or some pillows under the mattress.

My DD was over 9 and a half lbs and after a couple of days of mainly sleeping and taking small feeds she soon decided eating was her favourite thing to do :)

Congratulations again... I'm very broody Envy :)
