Avent Niplette - anyone know why advised against using in last 3 months of pregnancy?

Have got somewhat flat nipples that meant I had some latching difficulties with DC1. Have just bought the niplette to see if this will help draw them out in preparation for trying to feed DC2 but it says in the guidelines it isn't recommended for use in the last three months of pregnancy (I'm 30 weeks). Does anyone know why? Is it just the case that it could make you leak more colostrum and so won't be very effective, or could it actually be harmful in some way?

Btw I know that there are techniques etc to try which could also help with latch issues, I just thought this would be worth a shot too. Thanks!

Possibly because that nipple stimulation / "twiddling" is one of the things that is supposedly good at prompting labour?

I tried the nipplette too as I have got an inverted nipple... I was told that it isn't recommended in the last trimester as it stimulates the nipples and this is something that can sometimes induce labour

As an aside, I tried this as well as the Medela Nipple Formers and nipple shields as I had a horrible time trying to feed DD1 and gave up at 6 weeks and didn't want the same thing happening with DD2. In the end they didn't help me at all; what really helped was having a no-nonsense MW visit me for the first home visit after DD2's birth and tell me that it was nonsense trying any of this stuff and that I just needed to sort the latch. She helped immensely and I'm still feeding DD2 now at 13 weeks and not a bottle in sight. If only I'd seen her when I had DD1 (I went to the bf clinic at the hospital numerous times) we might have made it for longer...

Thanks for the info, that would make sense.

That's interesting Carikube, it's encouraging to see that with some good advice you managed 2nd time round. Hope I do to, at least I should be a bit more prepared this time!

miss hairspray I am in exactly same situation as you!!! Just bought niplette to try and prevent probs with DC2 but only just realsied about the last 3 months thing.

Have you decided to give it a try or not?

I am 26 weeks on Friday and deliberating about whether or not to give it a go for a few weeks...Confused Am a bit unclear what Avent would class as the last trimester, 26 weeks or 30 weeks??!!

However DS1 was 4 weeks early so def do not want to risk early labour and this was why his latch was poor, that in combination with my short nipples led to alot of faffing about. I used nipple sheilds for 7 weeks and did manage to successfully feed him for 6 months so I am confident I can do it again, just wanted to be a bit more organised.

Have you ever heard about this?

"make your own with a 10 cc disposable syringe. Remove the plunger, and with a sharp knife cut off a half inch from the nozzle end. Insert the plunger into the cut end of the syringe. Place the uncut open end of the syringe over your nipple so it rests up against your areola. Gently pull on the plunger to draw out your nipple just before putting baby to the breast."
