best sling for BF?

sorry if this has been done to death before...

am 34+3 now, and have a very very energetic, demanding 18 month old DS (who is gorgeous!! but... well... yes... energetic and demanding!! :) )

anyway... i really want to BF DC2, as I enjoyed it so much with DS, and have collected lots of ideas from here as to how we can still 'play' together while i'm on the sofa breastfeeding etc.

but people have mentioned slings and breastfeeding.

so, firstly, i'm just Shock (that's awe as well as shock!) that people could use a sling to BF! does that mean you did it hands-free???
I really struggled to BF DS for the first few months, so positioning was very important. but am wondering if this could be a possibility (eventually) this time??

secondly, which slings have people found best for BF? i have a wilkinet, which i love, but don't think it's really suitable. any tips/hints very much appreciated :)

Yup, hands free whislt shopping, playing with the older DCs, cooking.... Grin

Google Bubba Moe - it has saved me many times and is very discreet.

fantastic!! :) thanks.
will do... still in utter shock, awe and surprise that you could do this. but am definitely going to give it a go.
DS fed every 2 hours for up to 50 minutes at a time at one stage, so I think I'm going to have to use a sling to survive if DC2 is the same (which I guess is fairly likely...)

I use a moby d for bf. Works well although didn't manage this until about 6 weeks in due to massive norkage and need to get positioning just right. It's great now though.

I think a ring sling is easiest for breastfeeding - anything upright and I found DS had to be so low down that I was scared to move in case he fell out!

I think it probably helps if you have bigger boobs than me as you would be able to move them about more easily (?) Sorry if that sounds weird!

greenbananas · 19/08/2010 18:38

I have a ring sling which is absolutely fantastic and I still use it but I used a moby wrap for breastfeeding on the move when DS was still very little. With DS more or less upright in the wrap, I used to be able to breastfeed while doing the supermarket shop. It does take a bit of practice though Smile

thanks for all the advice.
will have a look at the moby and the bubba moe.

i didn't dare ask about boob size! but i did wonder if that makes a difference. mine aren't as small as they used to be (14 months of BF DS put paid to that!), but they're still not huge.

i think i may have to hire/ borrow a couple of slings at first. i know friend has a moby, and i think our local napuccino hires them out.

comments very useful. thanks :)

I tried and tried and tried in a moby sling but did not work. It was my 2nd bf baby so I knew what I was doing! I think my baby was maybe too long and ended up vertically down and really low (he almost fell out once) instead of across. I asked the website for advice and they were very unhelpful.

I would think that one across your body would be easier,

picc · 19/08/2010 19:19

hmmmm... interesting. yes. will have to look for a ring sling, too.
even when DS was quite big, i still used to mostly have him across my body to feed.
hadn't thought about that. guess i have to feel comfortable, too.
thanks :)
all very useful...

I can't breastfeed in wraps/mei tais/SSCs at all (think it might be a combo of having long babies and me being short-bodied). But I can bf in a ring sling- I just loosen the rings, adjust baby into a cradle hold and latch on, then tighten again. The tail of the sling can be used as a cover if necessary. After a feed I just re-adjust to an upright tummy-to-tummy position again for winding/sleeping.
I have managed to bf while pushing a supermarket trolley and chasing after DS1, which I would never have thought possible in the days of breastfeeding DS1.

I have no idea how I would manage without it- and my age gap is 2.5 years!

picc · 19/08/2010 23:21

okay... am veering towards ring sling, as i sit here without a baby for reference!
that feels more intuitive to me.
but will also try others if i can get my hands on them.
thanks again :)

I used a baba sling. Absolute lifesaver as there's an 18 month gap between my two.

I am watching this topic with eager eyes, as I've got a 3 week old who's ALWAYS wanting to feed, and I've not managed it in the moby wrap yet. I can't imagine things working in the connecta and/or ergo (which we also love) - they say 'just lower the straps' and I think "what, down to my knees?" - heh, not a chance. I love the moby for soothing him but I can't seem to get feeding him in there right. Maybe it's cos he's pretty long?

I've ordered a maya ring sling (what? surely four carriers is ok? I'm definitely stopping at four...) and am hoping THIS is the one I can BF in while working at the computer, wandering around the house, and maybe even walking the dog etc. We'll see.

blackcurrants · 22/08/2010 14:45

I managed to feed DS in the maya sling yesterday - victory!

Scarlett175 · 22/08/2010 20:43

I feed DD in our closer sling- can put it in loads of different positions, has a BF position and an instruction DVD to show you how to put on for this.... takes a bit of practice and wriggling to get it right but its a life saver...

Lerato · 22/08/2010 21:40

I used the baba sling too. BF in it for the first 6 months for DD2. Video on website was useful. Best postion for me was the rugby hold with DD2 under my arm.
Whatever sling you go for you can often find videos on youtube showing the techiniques for putting on / tips.
