baby suddenly crying when trying to latch her on

I am hoping someone can give me some advice about my 13-day-old baby, who I'm attempting to breastfeed after failing with my older son.

She has been latching really well and has gained a lot of weight since coming out of hospital last week - been feeding efficiently about 8-10 times a day for about 20-30 mins at a time. Early this morning she fed for ages and ages, but then towards the end of the feed seemed quite restless and squirmy, almost as if she was trying to escape from the breast (tho I wasn't pinning her on there!) and then puked ALOT. Then all today she's been really funny about latching on, crying a bit and squirming and towards the end of the day she's been refusing to latch on at all. It seems worse on the lefthand side but not great on the right either.

I guess my question is, what the hell is going on? what can I do to rectify things? I don't want to stress her out, but I'm getting quite stressed myself and I know that isn't helping. Has anyone else had an experience like this? Could it be that she's just having a bad day? At the moment I'm managing to get her to latch on for a few minutes at a time, but she won't suck for very long and then just falls deeply asleep for about 15 mins, before waking up and crying for milk again.

I'd be really grateful for any help/advice

Sounds like a good start with good weight gain and latch. Smile

When she starts to squirm, perhaps wind her, then you could pop her on the other breast for a bit.

Similarly once she wakes after that 15 minutes, just put her to the breast again.

This sounds like mine in the first few weeks - would only feed for about 2 mins and then fall asleep! We had to keep waking her by blowing and rubbing with wet cotton wool at one point - she is much more awake now at six weeks. Could be wind as well - try winding mid feed and see if that helps? My GP also said thrush can cause them to fuss and not want to feed.

I did wonder about thrush but there aren't any other symptoms? I mean, she hasn't got any white patches, nor have I, I haven't got any pain or anything like that? Can you have thrush without any symptoms?

I just spent some time in a quiet room doing skin to skin and she latched really nicely on both sides for about 30 mins. She did seem upset at the end of the feed on the lefthand side, so I took her off and she promptly fell asleep and wouldn't relatch. I'm not too worried about that as she had had a good feed before then, so it seems fair enough, especially as she hasn't had a long sleep today.

Just wondering what it could be that's upsetting her and making her not want to latch on in the first place?

yeah, perhaps she's just getting overtired?

I will hope that's the case and try and make sure she gets a good nap now - she's fast asleep on me at the moment, so hopefully that will set her up for the night.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone - keep them coming
