HI,

Lo is 5 and half months and keeps wanting to feed and evrytime she keeps coming off and screaming and screaming...This has happened for a few days now. Have given her teething gel in case it is that. At present Dp is trying to rock her round the house to see if ths works....It isn't though. Just started weaning her too.

My breast seemed to have changed too and my milk supply and let down very low......any advice....I beg you

bumping...

OP, I didn't want this to go unanswered, although I've not much advice.

Around this sort of age your breasts don't necessarily feel as full and at least some people don't notice such a strong letdown. It doesn't suggest that you don't have enough milk.

When you say your milk supply is low, what do you mean?

My DS gets very fussy and cries feeding if he's suffering from wind (although not quite screaming). His wind got a lot worse when he started on solids at 6 months. Could this be an issue?

have you had any periods since you had her? is it possible you're getting one?
my milk supply is always low when my period is due, and i always know when it's about to arrive cos baby starts feeding twice as much and getting v crochety on breast"!

I am experiencing the exact same thing! my 5 month old is so fussy...messing around at the breast, not feeding long, but then crying when finished....no longer that happy milk drunk contented look. until now I always had a quite strong painful let down, and that seems to have gone and my breasts are floppy and never feel full anymore....am starting to worry...and to make it worse, husband is saying "you dont have enough milk for her, we have to feed her formula".... she wants to feed all the time and i feel like I am failing her...

Repeat after me:

IT IS NORMAL for your breasts to adjust to your supply, thus no longer feeling full. It would be counter-productive to be engorged all the time. The majority of the milk you infant needs is made during a feed, not before it.

IT IS NORMAL to go through fussy constant feeding periods after previous settled ones. This is caused by growth spurts, teething and developmental leaps (sitting, crawling, walking etc).

It is a phase. It will pass. It will probably happen again at the next spurt. You are brilliant, your boobs are brilliant, TRUST them!

Exactly the same thing here (20 wk old), but she'd been getting fussy for ages now, particularly at the feed first thing in the am. This then progressed to any feed when she wasn't sleepy and was driving me insane. Her weight gain has slowed right down and have now started her on bottles of formula (after letting her feed from me first until she starts fussing). Seems to be working so far and she seems much happier afterwards. HV says this is common in BF babies and is a sign that they want something else eg. getting cross because it doesn't come out fast enough and wanting to move to solids soon. This didn't happen with my DD1 but they're all different!

Hi, Fifilottie, I read your thread yesterday but had no time to actually type a reply.

FWIW, my DS4 23 weeks is showing exactly the same annoying feeding behaviour: fusses at the breast, kind of bobs on and off whilst moaning, overall less settled.
He has always been small and skinny delicate, but is growing along the 2nd centile. He also fidgets at the breast and claws me red raw - v v annoying - unless I cut his fingernails every other day.

I hope this helps you as your account and others' has reassured me that 5-6 months of age seems to be an awkward time feeding wise for the little darlings Grin. BTW, I have not started solids yet, so can't even blame that for his changed behaviour.

Hope things will settle down soon for you and everybody else.
Smile
