BF and antibiotics

Feeling so fed up - was diagnosed with uterine infection today at 12 days pn, and just as I had started to get bf going well with DD I need to take antibiotics.
One is safe enough - Ceflexin - but the other I know is a bit murkier, Flagyl.
Anyone take these and suffer no adverse effects with baby? Am feeling so ill, and I know I need to take these to get better but I am really upset that this could affect DD when she is doing so well Sad

Congratulations on your baby and sorry to hear you're not well. I was given two antibiotics after the birth of DS3. Although I can't remember exactly which ones they were both names sound familiar and I googled Flagyl and it seems quite likely I was given it. If so I had no adverse effects and DS3 thrived. To be on the safe side though I would give your midwife a call and ask her if there are any alternatives and if not what side effects you should be looking out for and what you can do about them. Sorry I can't be of more help - I know it would be better if I was sure if I had the same antibiotics as you. Hope you feel better soon.

I have a copy of Hales medications and mother milk - which states that it does pass into the milk but it is commonly given to premature babies, infants and children, and virtually no adverse effects have been reported. And numerous studies show no untoward effects.

Levels in the milk peak about 2 hours after taking it (although you can't really time feeds in a baby this age that feeds all the timeSmile)

Hope this is helpful, have a look at the Breastfeeding Network drugs section too, is very helpful although I think the helpline is not in full use at present due to holidays. excellent resource

Thanks for the advice will see how today gies and check in with gp tomorrow. The rule of thumb seems to be that it is ok once benefits to mother outweigh risks to baby. Interesting about the 2 hour thing but you are right, dd not interested in waiting!
