Something (!?) just came out of my nipple! (TMI)

Was just feeding DS who is 6 weeks old from my right breast which has been quite sore and lumpy the past couple of days with what I think was a blocked duct. He unlatched and I noticed a small white stringy bit of milk on his lip. I wiped it away and noticed some on my nipple. I thought it was something that he sicked up but then I realised it was coming from my nipple. I squeezed it and a small amount of something white and with a thick consistancy came out(!). When that was gone milk came rushing out very quickly. I'm a bit freaked. That can't be normal can it? Will DS be okay if he ingested some of it?

So sorry to be so gross!

It's just the milk from the blocked duct, don't worry, your ds will be fine. It's good that it's no longer blocked!

jemjabella · 14/08/2010 15:48

It sounds like the blockage has come down - this is good :)

LeoniPoni · 14/08/2010 16:03

Phew! I did a google search after it happened and when nothing came up I was sure I had just poisoned DS!

My OH keeps looking at me in horror. He was almost as alarmed as I was.

Thanks for settling my nerves :)

It's ok, you won't have poisoned him!

Unless the breast was hot or red, you are very unlikely to have had an infection. And even if you had, your own antibodies would also be in the milk, offering protection. Even at his tender age, he probably gets worse things into his mouth!

TruthSweet · 14/08/2010 16:42

It's what's left from breast milk when all the water has been absorbed back in to the breast tissue (think of it like breast milk squashGrin)

LeoniPoni · 14/08/2010 19:45

Ah the things you learn!

I've never discussed body functions so much as I have in the past 6 weeks. Between DS's poo, sick and wee and my nipples, stitchs and piles I feel like all I do is ask gross questions!

Thanks for the info guys!

You wait until weaning - the poo conversations only get worse!

MumNWLondon · 14/08/2010 22:50

I was thinking it sounded ok - when I worked in a dairy milking farm when a cow has a blocked udder they had to be milked by hand and thats what came out! Once the blockage was all squeezed out they were back to normal milking.

Brollyflower · 14/08/2010 22:55

Snotty, stringy, like squeezed spot or toothpaste are all normal after a blocked duct. Usually it goes straight into baby so you don't notice. Not harmful to them at all Smile.

Can you tell I've had like a million blocked ducts in my bf career?

marriednotdead · 14/08/2010 23:19

OMG, I'd forgotten how gross that side of bf was- thanks for the reminder

Brollyflower · 15/08/2010 00:14

I aim to please Grin.

LeoniPoni · 15/08/2010 19:42

Brollyflower - on one hand I'm glad its normal. On the other, I am horrified at the 'toothpaste' thing. I pray to god that it goes straight into DS unnoticed when/if that happens.

Shudder...

I had one when very sleep deprived and was convinced for about five seconds a maggot had come out of my nipple Shock Blush Grin

Caz10 · 15/08/2010 22:51

bleeeeeeeeeee

stringy was my best word for it when it happened to me...now can't stop thinking maggots...

But to the OP, it is good that it came out! If you continue to be troubled by the blocked duct, a hot flannel is good, or put the shower head on it nice and hot and try to express a little

BertieBotts · 15/08/2010 22:54

I was speaking to someone recently who had this constantly and she described it as "silly string milk" Grin

Brollyflower · 15/08/2010 23:44

I swear my toddler actually prefers the taste of blocked duct milk. Didya know it's slightly salty Shock? On the other hand, my baby's not so clean, so I do tend to bring out the big guns for hoovering clean a blockage.

It's not as grim as you think to taste, I tried it once (in the name of science of course). I figured if I was prepared to let the dcs eat it I ought to be prepared to see for myself.

You're all thoroughly grossed out now, right [wink?

PS did I mention so clever mummies with very larger boobies can actually clear their OWN blocked ducts Shock? Yup, with suction.

Brollyflower · 15/08/2010 23:46

That's be keen, not clean Blush... though she is a bit grubby now I come to mention it.

Apparently some bf mums get hubbie on the case with blocked ducts too. That was definitely a step too far in this house!

LeoniPoni · 16/08/2010 09:20

Ha! And also bleeugh!

Brollyflower you have fast become my bf hero. Since in the name of science you have already tasted the blocked duct substance, I feel free not to bother...so thanks for that!

My DP would defo choose to let my boob explode rather than help me out with a blockage!

Whomovedmychocolate I NEED to know your thought process in those 5 seconds you thought a maggot was emerging from your nipple! Please please share!

Actually...Caz and Bertie speaking of stringy - DS's dirty nappy after the 'event' had a weird stringy bit in it. Do you think it could be the rest of the blockage??! God this has got to be the grossest thing about motherhood so far...

I am quite literally crying with laughter at this thread! Grin

Apart from really bad mastitus in the first week (caused by wearing a bra in bed, I might add), I've not had any more blocked ducts, but DS sucks very hard.

Lexilicious · 16/08/2010 13:33

Yeah, I recognise silly string milk. Had blocked duct then mastitis.

I went through a number of weeks of squeezing that stringy stuff Out Of A Hole In The Side Of My Breast to continue the job started when the A&E on call surgeon aspirated it without warning (childbirth? pah! you try having a needle jabbed in your already tender boob and drawing out gunk for a full 30 seconds. Not funny.) Aspirated is far too innocuous a word. I nearly punched the guy.

PomPotty · 16/08/2010 13:35

ROFL, well there you go then... you learn something new on every thread!

zazen · 16/08/2010 13:36

It's just old milk that was causing a blockage.

Take soya lecithin to emulsify your milk.
Hey presto, no more blocked ducts!

Hee hee, now I'm humming "That's not rice you're eating, it's Maggots" from the film Flushed Away!
