Does ethically produced & marketed formula exist?

Was wondering if any ethically produced and marketed breastmilk substitute exists. If it does, what is it? how/where do you buy it?

giving, not selling.

moondog · 26/08/2005 21:35

Point taken Pruni,point taken.

Maybe it is about challenging cultural assumptions then? (Pretty big topic to get into though in a 30 minute b/feeding awareness session!)

After all in many places in SA it's ok to eat guinea pigs isn't it?

(Don't really know where I'm going with this one....)

lemonice · 26/08/2005 21:37

I was mildly tongue in cheek, but it does ask a few questions such as

it's ok for cows but not humans
is it a worse way to earn money than some others
and if you accept donated milk but are willing to pay for sperm what is the difference

and why not?

In some countries you can sell your blood can't you? Worry is I suppose that people then do it for money....but then again why not? Nestle do it for bloody money don't they?

sansouci · 26/08/2005 21:41

hello! why sell something unless you want to make a profit?

Who does donate breast milk?

How is it requested at the moment, I've no idea but presumably most mothers who do establish breast feeding don't even think of donating because it isn't promoted to them (paid or unpaid)

And presumably it's not preserved because there is currently not enough and it's not commercially viable...

I wonder what these people say when people ask what their job is? I remember living in avery poor part of Russiaabout 7 years ago. Dh was helping to set up a state agricultural consultancy. One of the few foreigners there was working for Wrigleys to get the brand established. What an embarassingly useless job eh?

I've also just remembered that there were always lots of sexy skimpily dressed girls hanging around on the street offering free samples of 'Western' cigareetes. In fact, they would take your Russian brand packet off you and exchange it for Marlboro or whatever.

Said it many times before, but in PNG where I lived for all of my childhood, the govt. so concerned (thanks to being heavily lobbied by a group called 'Susu Mama') by rising mortality rate in neonates as a result of indiscriminate use and promotion of formula, that bottleswere only available on prescription.
Made an enormous difference in a very short space of time.

emkana · 26/08/2005 21:55

Would it be awful if I did a quick hijack to say how very very pleased I am to see that you, moondog, are still here after all? I would have missed your posts very much .

sansouci · 26/08/2005 21:56

as an aside, i tried to donate some breastmilk in the clinic when i gave birth because a nurse told me some mums were having trouble & was informed that it was "forbidden for hygenic reasons". shame.

li,I posted awhile back about a talk I went to where a m/w from Countess of Chester hospital came to talk about there milkbank (allset up through fundraising btw-no state money involved, although they were pushing for it.)
Apparently there used to be loadsmore, but Aids/HIV put astop to that.

It was fascinating, she talked about donors (purely altruistic)how they collected it,tested it,pasteurised it and so on. Sadly about 30% was wasted (too much bacteria present as a result of incorrect storage I think) but it did make an enormous difference.

It was lovely actually,as just before she closed, she mentioned having a stock of collostrum very close to its 'use by' date ands asked if it could be used by anyone.
Was swiftly claimed for avery sick baby in the SCBU unit of the hospital the talk was held in.

i've used Nestlé because the pediatrician recommended it for my dcs. they both were at risk for allergies & Nestlé provided the "best" hypoallergenic formula. I should have done some research first, i guess.

Ameriscot2005 · 26/08/2005 22:03

I don't think the Nestlé boycott applies to infant formula, even though that is at the centre of it. The whole point of the boycott is to do the right thing for babies, and if your baby is better off with Carnation or whatever, then that's what you should use.

moondog · 26/08/2005 22:03

Thanks emkana. Very pleased to be able to return.I was in mourning for aday or so!

Sansouci, perhaps my post explains why they refused. Would have been simpler to out the bay to your breast.

Oh,I completely agree Pruni.Same with feminism in Russia.Amazed at how appallingly sexist it is,and how the women love having doors opened for them, being presented with flowers and so on. Even had one businessman I was teaching English to,open an office door in his building and say 'Look at that' to me about his new sexy secretary who simpered girlishly.

Obviously they were pissed off with years of plastering buildings and working like dogs on collective farms.

Glamour, fripperies, froth and nonsense. Bring it on!

moondog · 26/08/2005 22:04

No,when was it on,Pruni?

Moondog..this is what i can't understand what is the difference between blood and milk donation, and if these problems have long since been overcome with cows, goats and sheep they can't be overcome with humans (I realise that illnesses which affect humans are more likely to affect humans but other animal illnesses such as CJD are suggested to cross)

sansouci · 26/08/2005 22:06

sorry, Moondog? don't understand "out the bay to your breast".
