How do I get 10 week old to take expressed milk from bottle? Switch bottle?

I've forgot to keep training my ds1 (100 weeks) to take milk from a bottle and discovered this week he's no longer prepared to do it (he did a couple of times when we tried in the earliest weeks). I'd like to be able to do it to give the occasional sore nipple a break, or to let DH do a feed.

Should I buy other bottles? I'm using the ones that came with medula expressor and I've heard you can get other ones with softer teats, vacuums etc. Does that work for everyone? Any other suggestions?

No suggestions I'm afraid, but I'm watching with interest... Like you I stopped/forgot/was getting on really well with breastfeeding... And can no longer get him to take a bottle, he's 18weeks now and I've been trying for about 8 weeks.

breastflow bottles? Have heard they work well as the sucking action is the same.

tommee tippee back to nature

my DD hated those- but she was intoduced to bottles at about 7days old because we had to do top ups and cup feeding was messy and we wanted her nasogastric tube out. She did start being ok with them from 20weeks so a 10 week old bottle refuser may be okay with a tommee tipee.

Saw a bottle called yoomi recommended in Mother and Baby Magazine as best for combination feeding. Am thinking of trying it myself so will post a review and let you ladies know.

I've seen those yoomi on JohnLewis.com do let us know how you get on. DH would love the warming gadget. I think I'll try some cheaper options first tho

Does your ds have a dummy?
My ds stopped taking a bottle at around 16 weeks have now been trying for 4 weeks and have eventually got him to take a couple of ounces from a teat that is same as his dummy (MAM) so if he takes a dummy maybe try teats from same brand???

schipo · 13/08/2010 22:05

Nice idea I can't get him to take a dummy either and I've already tried different types of those.

I've ordered a selection of bottles and await their arrival.

There is a new bottle out by Medela called Calma which is supposed to be good.

I haven't used it yet as DD is only 3 days old but have bought planned to try it when she around 5 weeks assuming breastfeeding is well established.

schipo · 15/08/2010 17:20

Do you know if the Calma teats will fit on old medula bottles?

My friend tried that new one that warms the milk really quickly. She said it's making her life much easier, after she had to partially stop breastfeeding and go to formula as well for her new baby...I am due in Nov...thinking I may get a Yoomi warming bottle for when i express milk or maybe when i fly long-haul in Feb. Anyone else tried it??

I have just had a nightmare with my DD taking to a bottle but all is well now. We first tried at 4 weeks with expressed breast milk and an Avent bottle and it went brilliantly. After that I didn't bother to keep up using a bottle as I had problems expressing and when we tried again at 8 weeks she refused. I wasn't that bothered at the time and tried a bottle every couple of weeks. Still nothing. At around 4 and a half months I started to panic as I realised that I was going to have to stop bf at 6months when I started some medication. Cue panicked daily battles with a bottle. I tried, Avent, Closer to Nature, Tommee Tippee, MAM, a doidy cup, a normal beaker, sip cups, Dr Brown's and Nuk. On rotation. Eventually she started to occasionally take the Dr Brown's. Then I started her on solids and she loved them - so I snuck extra milk into her purees and porridge. My HV said not to worry and one day i tried the Nuk bottle again (with a slanted teat with the hole in the top that mimics how a nipple is in the mouth) as it had a larger bottle than the Dr Brown and since then DD has gulped down her 20 ozs a day from the Nuk glass bottle and teat. This finally worked at 6 and a half months. A friend had the same problem with her LO and found that first she too the Closer to Nature and now will only use Avent. All these bottles etc can be pricey so borrow as much as you can - which is what I did. Good luck and try not to panic - mine worked it out once she was hungry enough.

DD we did as Stangirl before we found a bottle she would take (but she was younger 4 months) and MAM was it.

DS1 had no choice as I had all the MAM bottles, just bought new teats for him.

DS2 I was determined that as he was going to be EBF for a long as he wanted, I would just get cheap bottles and teats for the occasional expressed feed...including a weekend away when he was 6 months. Ha ha ha...we did the merry go round again and back to (new) MAM bottles. But I actually think it's the teat they prefer...my nipples must be MAM shaped! Anyway DS2 has only ever had a bottle under sufferance and he only has as much as will take the edge off e.g. a few ounces.
