Twiglett picked this up. It's for health professionals. Ordinary mortals aren't allowed on. They want to know exactly what people's statues is within the world of infant feeding.

Looks like they offer heavily logo'd freebies too.

AHAs,and toning extracts to tighten up the stomach lining?

Roxswood · 27/08/2005 21:34

Yes they add ground up fish eyes and intestines to get the long chain fats so they can claim to be "closest to breastmilk" ok.. so who are the lunatics that eat ground up fishes eyes that they think they should put them in formula!

aloha · 27/08/2005 21:56

I think it's very important to get LCPs for early brain development, and if the only food a baby is getting is formula, then I think it is important that the formula contains them. Madeleine Portwood who is a world expert on Dyspraxia thinks that too.
As for what maniac gets their LCPS from fish, well I do, and so does ds, and so does dd (via my breastmilk from the supplements I take).
Slag off formula manufacturers by all means - be my guest - but I think it is a misguided argument personally to criticise them for improving their product.

Roxswood · 27/08/2005 22:04

It should at least be clearly labelled on the front of the box so people who choose to avoid giving their children fish early in life can choose to avoid this too. Its not obvious at all, and I know a couple of vegetarian families who were horrified to learn they'd been feeding their children ground fish.

Uhoh, now I'm expecting to start off a debate about whether its ok to bring your child up as a vegetarian..

hercules · 27/08/2005 22:06

Surely all the ingredients are labelled??

aloha · 27/08/2005 22:23

LCPs may be derived from fish but they are not allergenic in the same way fish itself is. That's a total non-issue.
Fish oils are the best possible source for LCPs. Vegetarian sources are second best, though still much better than nothing.
The ingredients are on the packaging.
There might be an issue about making it clear to vegetarians, but that's not a health issue and it doesn' t IMO make it wrong to add ingredients which are likely to be beneficial to babies.

From the BBC website:

However, it is not always possible for every mother to breast feed, and scientists are looking for ways to soup up formula milk with extra ingredients to bridge the nutrition gap between the two.

This could have significant implications for their learning ability at school.

Dr Peter Willatts, University of Dundee Some of the ingredients of breast milk, not found in infant formula milk, are "long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids" (LCPs).

A project led by the University of Dundee, compared babies with this supplement added to their formula for the first four months to those being fed normal formula milk.

The main idea of the survey was to see how these babies were progressing mentally even years afterwards.

Sharper and faster

Six-year-old children who had been fed infant milk with the supplement had faster mental agility - and were more efficient in understanding and solving problems.

Dr Peter Willatts, who was involved in the project, told a conference in Birmingham: "Breastfeeding is best for babies but not always possible.

"The aim of the latest study was to investigate the long-term effects of using LCPs, particularly to see if there was any difference in speed of taking decisions an IQ of children in the two groups."

Learning ability

He continued: "Both groups were asked to complete a series of tasks involving a succession of picture matching.

"The group given the LCP supplement from birth were measurably faster in finding the correct images, and other intelligence tests showed them to be more efficient in understanding and solving problems.

"This could have significant implications for their learning ability at school."

Preliminary data also suggests that LCP supplementation during infancy may be linked to lower blood pressure in later childhood, and even later into adulthood.

Breast milk naturally contains LCPs, although the quantities can vary depending on the amount of oily fish, nuts and green leaf vegetables are being eaten by the mother, as these are rich sources.

I know people who were very surprised just what formula does contain when they read the label properly - including vegetarians. I also know several parents who were avoiding peanuts and were very surprised when I told them to read the nutella jar properly.

Bottom line - if you are avoiding anything for any reason you need to read the labels every time.
