Silverette - opinions?

Just reading an old thread praising Silverette cups for healing nipples - anyone got any experience (good or lacklustre) of these? I'll consider getting them if there's overwhelming support but having already spent ££ on various things to help me through breastfeeding this time I'm a bit reluctant to spend more...

I have not tried Silverette - but I have tried jelonet and this seems to really be working (fingers crossed!).

I'd recommend them for cracks - they really helped clear up cracks on my LHS. It was quite amazing how quickly they worked. They are also very discreet and easy to use.

But they didn't work on the deep crack on my RHS, but then nothing did (including the wonderful jelonet) until I had antibiotics as it was infected.

I used them and am probably on the old thread!

They are not going to solve the root of the problem of sore nipples (latch issues, tongue tie, etc) but they might help relieve the actual trauma. Which would only re-occur if you hadn't sorted the actual issue IYSWIM.

I used them because I had a deep crack that wouldn't heal due to the presence of thrush. My rubbish latch had at last improved (due to baby growing, really) and the crack just wouldn't heal up because of the thrush.

Being highly suspicious of the whole silver thing (and broke after forking out for a million alternative thrush treatments to take alongside the fluconazole prescribed to me) I taped a silver ring onto the crack with micropore tape to see if it had any effect! I was amazed, but the ring was going to potentially cause blocked duct issues (dumb idea really!) so I bought the silverettes. They were half price when I bought them.

The crack just got better and better and within about a week had finally gone. I had had it for ages, weeks and weeks. Brilliant.

So for me, they worked, but like I said before, the initial cause had been sorted out.

HTH and best of luck with bf. I never thought EVER that I would feed pain free and although it took forever, with the help on MN, Kellymom website and a lovely real life breast feeding counsellor and weekly support group I am still feeding my son and he's neary 2!

I am mega sceptical of anything alternative but was desperate, terrible deep cracks that bled all the time. Agonising. Used jelonet with lansinoh but it was the silverette shields that really healed them although do have deep scars on each nipple. Bf exclusively for over a year and currently bracing myself for no 2 in 5 weeks. Please God not again though!

Thanks all - I've been prescribed Jelonet (and already have Lansinoh) but wondered if Jelonet actually encouraged thrush (moist environment) which I'm currently taking treatment for, so I was wondering if the Silverette would be better. I'm not sure if anything is going to improve the nipple hurt situation permanently other than DD growing, some feeds are OK but others are not and particularly on the days I have both her and DS (ie 3 times the distraction/difficulty of non-DS days). So was wondering about getting the Silverette knowing that I would have ongoing use for it... Would prob buy them if cheaper, it's the £35 price tag that puts me off!

Yes I got mine half price as I said. Quite often they seem to not be available at all, have seen a few posters come on here asking how to get them.

I stopped using Lansinoh for the damp reason. And I had to empty my silverettes often as they filled with milk! But like I said, they were a god send. I would offer to sell you mine but I am fearful of parting from them in case I ever need them again!

Thanks! Lansinoh is great for lips, by the way - used up the last of previous supply that way, no cracked lips for 2 years!

I wouldn't really say Silverette cups were "alternative". Silver ions are antimicrobial there is an article on BBC news about silver-lined pyjamas being used to combat MRSA infection in hospitals. Article link below. I did do a scan of mumnet before buying mine as I was a bit sceptical and they're £40 bloomin quid but they ended my breastfeeding hell of 10 weeks (3 courses of Fluconazole, Daktarin cream, 4 visits to GP, abscess, mastitis twice, biopsy, mammograms - tough times!). Anyway I'm posting like mad. Been using them for 3 weeks now. All healed within a week but I'm not taking chances. They're recommended by the midwives at the breastfeeding clinic at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh and their Infant Feeding Specialist so they're not some crazy wacky gimmick. Although you do look a bit funny wearing them. I'm posting like mad to get the word out.
