Both breasts at each feed?

Hi there,

BF'ing DD who is just 5 days old - was hurting a lot but I knew I was doing something wrong and it turns out she wasn't latched on properly and was sucking on nipple pnly. Anyhoo, midwife has shown me how to get her to latch on properly, so I (we) just need to practice and get my nipples healed up as they are a bit sore. I just hope I can manage to get her to latch properly! She said now they advise that both breasts are offered to baby at each feed.

If baby is full and comes off one breast, how am I supposed to do that? She seems to feed on one, then is finished. The next time, I use the other breast - is that the correct thing to do?

Thanks for any advice!

Yes you are doing everything fine my DS never wanted the 2nd breast until he got quite a bit older and seemed satisfied with the one breast and like you I just offered him the other breast at the next feed. Have you tried Lansinoh for your sore nipples? It is very good for healing. Congratulations on your new baby!

Just follow your instincts, maybe offer her the second one and she can have more if she wants or just snuggle up to her mummy.

My MW said I MUST only give one boob per feed but also gave me an NHS magazine on bfeeding that said to offer both???

Just offer her the other one. If she doesn't want it, fair enough.

I used to give my DD the same one repeatedly as I thought that would get her more "hindmilk" but I am not sure where I got that gem from and with hindsight I bet alternating is just fine too.

Well done for keeping going past the sore bit. Pretty soon it'll settle down, stop being sore and then it will be lovely.

hi yes ive always offered both sides..found that way i was usually she they had had enough and usually lasted longer until the next feed! If you feed both sides you start on the one you finished on at the previous feed. If you only feed one side offer the other at next feed!

I found the best way with a newborn is feed first side until finished then change nappy then offer the other side

Re: the hindmilk/foremilk thing, TikTok (who knows all!) once linked to this to explain about it on a thread and I remember it being v useful.

Thank you all for the advice, much appreciated!! It seems she feeds from one side, then mybe 30mins later she may take more from the other side.

Have Lansinoh thanks, so putting that on to try and heal things up.

Thanks again
