my baby is now three days old and breastfeeding seems to be going well I have a bit of pain when she first latches on but it eases down after a minute and once she has got going at the moment it feel really strong but no stabbing pain or extreme soreness.

Anyway she was awake ALOT last night was trying to feed for about 3 hours, I kept going for three hours but she was sick so in deperation i put a dummy in her mouth and she fell straight to sleep for 3 hours.

She then woke at around 9am and had a feed of around 20-25 minutes but only on one side - my milk has come in this morning and she seemed to be getting enough from that side I did offer the other side after but she pursed up her lips and went to sleep lol.

She is still asleep now at quarter to twelve so I am wondering whether i need to wake her - I am panicking that she was still hungry last night after i used the dummy but she just fell asleep because of the dummy? also is 20 minutes enough and only from one side?

The other thing is that i am leaking quite alot now so would appreciate her feeding! - my 18 month old just came in and I realised that there was milk everywhere - my boobs still think she is my baby lol.

so any advice on these things please!

argh!

At that age I left 4 hours max after a feed, bet she's woken by the time I post this!

In his first 3 weeks my DS would occasionally sleep for 6 hours, and once for 7, but he kept producing wet and dirty nappies and plenty of them so I left him to it.

If she is hungry I would expect her to wake when the desire to feed over-rides the sleep so I wouldn't wake her this time personally.

If it is daytime and you are full up then give her a gentle nudge and see if she wants some. I usually go with the don't wake them up thing but sometimes I got uncomfortable and needed emptying.

yes do wake her!

it's important that she feeds frequently in the early days
some babies can get a bit sleepy, and then don't feed so much. that in turn makes them even sleepier and they feed less. so it can turn into a vicious circle

i would def wake a 3 day old after 2-3 hours

Personally I would want to feed a newborn at least every 3 hours (from start of feed to start of next feed) in the day. I would generally pick them up either when they stir or after say 2.5 hours. If they don't want try again half hour later. I never wake a baby at nighttime though.

20 mins from a full breast is a lot, a full tummyful for a newborn.

My MW told me that I should not allow my newborn to go longer than 4 hours between feeds (start to start). Once home from the hosp I was told not to allow any longer than 4 hours between feeds during the day and no longer than 6 hours between feeds during the night. My DD was really sleepy at the start.

I would waken her every 3-4 hours is she is sleepy. TBH you will probably find that now your milk is in you will stop having to waken her.
