please help me keep going with BF

I really struggled to get BF going with 11 week DS (mastitis, blocked ducts, cracked nipples etc etc)

by 6 weeks or so, it started going really well, and I felt so happy, as hadn't managed to do it with DD 2.5 years earlier

Anyway, 2 weeks ago, something seems to have gone wrong, and he has gone from being happy and contented to being unsettled and miserable most of the day, and 90% of his poos are green and they're very frequent

He doesn't seem ill, and he does do occasional yellow poos and is gaining weight and so on

I feel like my milk is somehow suddenly bad for him, and despite trying everything, I'm flummoxed.

DH is pressurising me to try formula, as he thinks DS should be feeling more happy and contented and that the green poos overall are bad for his development as they stop him sleeping as well as he could, relaxing and playing like he should and so on

I really think my milk is best for him long term, but can also see DH's point.

I want to carry on so much, but am feeling more and more disheartened, and formula seems like a good option again, suddenly, despite everything we've been through to get BF going

My GP and HV are useless when it comes to BF, as most people round here FF

to be honest, the whole thing makes me want to cry! Everything was going so well, now it's all gone wrong again - I feel like it can't really be as hard as this. Have I got my expectations wrong? And would it just be better for all, especially DS, if we switch to formula - are the health benefits of my milk being wiped out by the fact it's giving him green poo?

My bf ds had green nappies for a few weeks I think quite early on - maybe from about 4 weeks. I remember feeling a bit worried but carried on bfing and eventually they went back to mustard again! Am still bfing him on demand and he is 20mo and a big healthy boy

Pinata sorry to jump in, and glad you're feeling a bit better, but I'm in Newham and if you'd like, can put you in touch with individuals locally who can help even if the groups aren't running - email me on jmh at pertelote dot org

Don't have much useful to add, just wanted to cheer-lead you pinata!

11 weeks is still very early and I actually found the 3 month bit harder than earlier on. You are doing brilliantly and it doesn't sound like there is any reason to doubt your body's ability to nourish your baby. DD had recurrent green poo and seemed uncomfortable, so I cut out dairy and it did the trick. I spoke to GP/HV first and make sure I have as much calcium-rich stuff as I can. DD is still feeding at 8 months.

Good luck and trust your instincts!

Igglybuff do you have to avoid stuff with soya flour in it as well? That seems to be in everything. I'm surprised how much stuff has milk in it - just bought some sugar sprinkles for DD to decorate cookies with and even they've got milk in...

FessaEst did it take a few weeks for cutting out dairy to work for you as well?

pertelote, thanks, I will drop you an email

Yes, definitely feeling much better - yesterday I was really down. Even though doc didn't really help, it's always nice to be reassured it's (hopefully) nothing serious

And you guys have all been so helpful and kind, sharing your own experiences - it makes a huge difference to know you're not the only one.

DH is generally very supportive, but I think it's hard for anyone to really understand how much a desire to BF can take over. I never understood myself until now, after really going through hell to get it pain free. The thought that my milk had suddenly turned from a good thing to a bad thing was awful

Some stuff on green poo here ...

Igglybuff · 04/08/2010 23:35

I've not heard of soya flour before. Basically I avoid ready made stuff which is easiest way - as you say, milk is in everything! Right pain.

pinata · 05/08/2010 11:03

quick update - no dairy and 2 feeds per boob has produced 3 almost completely yellow poos in a row! Hurray! The first for 2 weeks

thank you again, everyone. I have been smiling all morning

Great news pinata!

You can get milk based on oats which is better than rice milk IMO for cereal and hot chocolate.
