burping a sleeping baby overnight?

My 4-week-old has turned into quite a windy baby, probably because I've got a big supply and he's a panicky drinker. He's currently feeding every 2 hours at night,

He sleeps like an angel between night feeds, and comes off the breast in a deep sleep, but lately he has started snuffling and making choking noises for a few minutes after being put back in his cot, which is quite alarming (though I've watched him do it and he's totally fine).

Should I be burping him after his night feeds and running the risk he will wake up? Having a baby that sleeps has been one of the joys of being a new mother so far, when feeding him is still so difficult and painful for me.

I don't burp my dd2 after night feeds - she's 10 weeks but moving her when she comes off usually means she burps anyway.

By the way - why is feeding so painful?

DS2 used to do the chokey sounds at night, personally I think he was just messing with my head.

If he only does it for a bit and then settles then he will grow out of it.

Feeding is painful because poor lamb is a panicker, and took ages to learn how to latch on (partly because I have enormous breasts and weird nipples), so that I got a bit desperate and put up with any old latch as long as he was getting some food. He's also a very strong baby and has a very powerful suck! Baby and I are now retraining with a proper latch, but when he gets very hungry I'm still putting up with pain to make sure he's getting enough food. We'll get there, but meantime it's not much fun.

I just put my DD on my chest and pat her back for a couple of minutes, she doesn't usually wake up
