Successful BF with small boobs?

smk84 · 02/08/2010 16:01

I am wondering if anyone has succesfully fed their babies in spite of having small boobs? I only managed a month with my DS, and wonder whether this was a contributing factor?

TBH I dont think it is - sorry. I have small boobs and it didnt make a difference - they werent so small when i was feeding though...God I miss them...

MumNWLondon · 02/08/2010 16:03

My SIL is practically flat yet has been feeding almost non stop for 3 years....

pagwatch · 02/08/2010 16:04

I am pretty much flat chested but fed all my children for min 6 months and last child beyond 2 years.
I don't think breast size and milk production are related are they?

CatIsSleepy · 02/08/2010 16:05

don't think so, am fairly flat-chested and feeding went pretty well with dd2

pagwatch · 02/08/2010 16:05

at omni ..God I miss them too.
I was probably only up to a b cup when fully engorged but it was so much better than nowt

thank you, it's just that if i have another baby i really, really want to BF for much longer, and it's good to know that having small ones doesn't stop people. i was so anxious about it last time (think that's the main reason it went wrong), ended up with PND and think that stopping feeding was a big part of that. Did any of you ever feel uncomfy about feeding in front of people?

I did with the first one (feel slightly uncomfy) - not at all with the second, being small of nork makes tha much easier as well as noone really has to see anything.

Meglet · 02/08/2010 17:24

Mine are compact and while it was nearly impossible to get DS to latch on I was able to express gallons of the stuff.

Feeding DD was much easier, lots of milk, no problems. Just the minor matter of it driving me up the wall which was a PITA.

I have small breasts and had no problems breastfeeding. My mum's are even smaller and she fed me and then my sister for about a year each.

I think being small breasted helps with feeding discreetly - just lift up top and put baby in right place. In my case the head of the baby was always bigger than my breast so covered it perfectly

logrrl · 02/08/2010 19:45

I am completely flat chested (AA cup before baby, now A and have been feeding for well over a year) with no problems.

I have two just-about-recovered anorexic friends who have next to no breasts and they have also BF successfully.

smk84 · 02/08/2010 21:08

This is all so encouraging ! Before we have another baby I am determined to get over my self-conciousness !

I thought the rule is the smaller the better with bf and it was well known? My friend with her double AAs was the most successful and my G-cups were bloody useless.

RobynLou · 02/08/2010 21:12

my mum's practically flat chested and fed 3 of us! definitely do-able! good luck!

staranise · 02/08/2010 21:14

Size makes no difference - in fact, smaller boobs are easier for the baby to latch on (latching on to a big breast is like latching on to a football). The milk is not 'stored' in the breast so size is not proportionate to milk flow. I'm an AA cup and BF three kids for over a year each.

Bof luck with your next baby!

ArthuriaAugustaDArcy · 02/08/2010 21:14

No - bf was a nightmare for me with my DCs, and I have no norks. But I don't think that was the problem!

spiderlight · 02/08/2010 22:46

I was a small A-cup before pregnancy, 'ballooned' to a B-cup when my milk came in and have been breastfeeding with no problems for over 3 years.

twolittlemonkeys · 02/08/2010 22:55

Another small-chested BFer here. I fed each of my boys for just over a year. Several friends were envious that I could feed so discreetly and easily

FlightofFancy · 03/08/2010 09:01

I'm another small-chested person with no problems - in fact a DS who has gone from 25th percentile at birth to 91st at 7 months with little more than boob juice. I'm also going to miss actually almost having a cleavage.

arabellaandbaby · 03/08/2010 10:53

Pre-baby, I was majorly flat in the bosom area, and have now gone up to a B cup, and have been feeding my 5mo DD absolutely fine since she was born. My friend who shot up to a G cup gave up after 6 weeks blaming insufficient milk. So there you go. Boob size does not dictate how well you will be able to breastfeed.

Great news , thanks again.
