How much is Too Much possetting?

ZombiePlanB · 31/07/2010 20:29

History: Ds1 didn't posset at all. Like a tiny little bit, so we didn't bother carrying muslins, bibs etc around with us.

DS2 however, possets after every feed. He is difficult to burp. He also possets about an hour after a feed, and the milk has separated in his stomach. He's also brought up yellow bile (once).

DH just thinks he is greedy and over feeds. I have got a lot of milk I think.

Is this normal? We have been joking that he's 'leaky' but I am beginning to worry it's too much.

Any ideas?

DD2 is a big possetter too, which was a shock after DD1 who was never sick. DD2 up until a few weeks ago puked copiously straight after and between feeds. I chose not too worry too much as she didn't seem in pain, fed well and had plenty of wet and dirty nappies. I have a rather overactive letdown so I think she was getting a lot of milk very quickly. It has improved as she's become bigger and stronger so she's rarely sick now. HTH

I had lots and lots of milk when DS was little and such a fast letddown that sometimes he choked. He was very often sick after the first morning feed until I started winding him in the middle of the feed i.e. one boob, stop and burp, then boob 2. He screamed like billyo mind you when I stopped him after boob no.1 for winding but it worked every time.

DD and DS1 hardly ever possetted. DS2 possetts a lot. He is a "better" feeder than either of them - stronger, sucks for longer, I think he just doesn't know when he is full, or maybe he likes sucking so much he doesn't want to stop. I'm not worried unless its huge volumes, which only happened when he was really tiny.

Neither of my first two sons posseted, but DS3 was another matter! It seemed to me that he brought up most of every feed, but he was a contented baby, slept well and gained weight brilliantly, so i can only assume that the amount he posseted was deceptive and that he was definitly getting plenty. Incidently I don't remember DS1 being sick once, but he was a fretful baby in the early months, a terrible sleeper and took nearly 6 weeks just to put his birthweight back on!

DS1 and DD2 never brought up a drop, but DD1 was a nightmare, permanently spitting up little mouthfuls from the moment she was born, right until she started standing up, when it stopped virtually overnight.

She was a very small baby with a big appetite, and she certainly over-ate in the early days. But I never worried about it, because she was happy, alert and gaining weight. If your DS is the same, then don't worry - you'll see it clearly if there's something wrong or he's undernourished.

How old is your ds.
My ds2 projectile vomited after almost every feed for the first couple of months of his life. Settled down after that.
I wasn't worried at first because although I thought it a bit much, I hadn't heard of pyloric stenosis until around the time that he started to settle (so obviously it wasn't that).
Maybe talk to your gp if you are very worried?

Reading all these has made me feel lots better. Ds is 6wks old. He's growing well, lots of dirty nappies and sleeps well.

Thank you. I will mention it to GP at 6week check but am sure she'll say it's perfectly normal.

Same here. I've only 1 DD but she was a very possetty baby - every feed in the 1st few months and often it felt to me like it was virtually a whole feed coming up. I never went out without 3 muslins and at least 1 whole change of clothes for DD. She never made it to the end of the day in the same clothes.

I used to mention it at the HV clinic virtually every week and they were always reassuring - provided baby is gaining weight reasonably and is generally content etc. You say that your DS' growth, sleep and nappies are all good and that's brilliant!

I think fast letdown was part of the issue with us; it definitely settled as she got bigger.

DS2 is a chucker. Doesn't seem to bother him though and I have just gotten used to smelling slight of cheese.

passionberry · 01/08/2010 20:27

DD is 15 weeks - she brought up huge amounts when she was tiny (looked like the whole feed at times) and I did worry a bit.

She still brings up a few mouthfuls after most feeds - I carry muslins everywhere and usually have a sick covered shoulder!

She has steadily gained weight though so it obviously hasn't caused problems.

Am wondering now if I have a fast let-down too.
