Is blood making my baby vomit?

Gracie123 · 29/07/2010 16:50

I have a beautiful new baby girl (4 days old) and I'm attempting to feed her as I did with my son, but it's been a few years and all feels very new again!

I am struggling with sore nipples (I did at the beginning with DS too, and I know it will pass in a week or two) but have noticed one nipple is bleeding when I feed her.

She recently threw up most of a feed, and there was quite a lot of blood in it, and the nipple was dripping blood when she finished. Could the blood be making her vomit?

Should I just feed on the other side until this nipple heals?

Thanks

Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl!

Sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding. There are lots of reasons why a baby might vomit, and I imagine ingesting a significant amount of blood could cause vomiting.

What are you doing to help heal your nipples? Do you have someone - someone who knows about bfing - advising you? Has your baby's latch been checked?

Latch is poor, and I keep correcting it, but as I learned with my son, sometimes takes time to get them to do it right naturally first time.

I have lansinoh to help heal it, which worked brilliantly last time. Using johnsons breast pads at the moment. Normally I will use lilypads, but find that the sticky is a bit too painful on already sore boobs!

How is your baby now? Is she keeping down her milk?

I do think you should speak to a bfing counsellor, and a midwife about the vomiting.

Do get support. I had this with ds1, but it turned out that something else was causing both the poor feeding and the vomiting.

Was it posseting or projectile vomiting? Was the milk curdled?

f* me, get support. your nipples should not be 'dripping with blood' . i had a crack which was frankly agony, so i cannot IMAGINE what this must feel like for you!

get real life help, immediately! go to a local breastfeeding drop in/baby cafe and get some helpful person to help you get this sorted out! you poor thing, that is just awful!

get that latch sorted out i had to be really strict with DS as he has mild tongue tie. i looked at pictures of a good latch etc.

you breastfed your other DC - sorry if you know all this - amazing how we forget isn't it! i am already worried about what might happen next time .

Congratulations on your dd, aah only 4 days old!

I had sore nipples too, some blood, but once I used some cream they were healed by the morning. The district nurse had warned me that I couldn't feed with bleeding nipples, then said that the only way to sort it out was to feed

Anyway I would go to your gp or as belgo said a bfing counsellor.

I've read that whilst bfing when washing you shouldn't let soap or soapy water near your nipples,it can aggrevate them, and there is no need anyway because they are being constantly cleaned by baby and your milk has cleasning qualities. I always just threw a bit of water that way. I think that might have helped me heal there very fast.

Best of luck and enjoy these special early days
