really achy joints when breastfeeding? (most of the time not just during a feed!)

My DD is almost 6months and since starting breastfeeding my joints are incredibly achy especially in my hands and knees, worst in the morning but gets better with some gentle flexing. I did some googling and someone else on here said it was because breastfeeding made your body go into a "temporary menopause" with all the joys associated with that. So I just kind of put up with it- cept now the joint in my little finger is all swollen and so am a bit more worried. Am only 28- hoping its not arthritis or anything like that!!! (I mean having dd has put years on me but not that many!)

Anyone else had this?

I have it too and was going to start a thread so will be watching with interest. It is so uncomfortable and I'm feeling like an old woman! Hope someone comes along soon with some more info.

oh phew! I'm not alone. Well I shall be heading to the docs this week about the swollen joint so will post back what she says.

Get them to check your vitamin & mineral levels. Low vitamin D for example can cause joint pain (but shouldn't cause swelling afaik).

I had painful joints (especially my feet and ankles) for several months after the birth of both my children. I felt like an old woman in the mornings!

I must say, I didn't connect this with breastfeeding, I assumed it was just post-birth aches and perhaps to do with all the joint-loosening hormones you get during pregnancy.

No swelling though. That sounds more puzzling.

I had it too, but didn't breastfeed. I had lots of tests done but nothing came up, and it resolved itself eventually.

I was told somewhere that it could be a lack of calcium, so maybe consider calcium supplements?

Lots of good suggestions thankyou. Must make that appointment!
