Too much diet coke?? Wide awake baby!

I haven't actually been feeding the baby diet coke I hasten to add.

So, yesterday my normally sleepy 6 week old barely slept all day - just very fitful catnaps in the sling. She usually sleeps really well in the night but instead of going off at 8.30/9/30 ish she didn't drop off til gone midnight. She was so, so awake. Not unhappy though - she was smiling and gurgling away for some of it, the little monkey!!

I'm wondering if I had too much diet coke the day before? I had 3 cans (I was out with friends) instead of none/just 1. I don't drink any tea or coffee so this would have been my only source of caffiene.

God, I hope she doesn't repeat it today, me and DH were exhausted by the time she fell asleep!

ooh am interested too as i wonder about the effects of diet coke too, i have a can a day plus 2-3 cups of tea plus chocolate....

I wouldn't consume aspartme while breast feeding. I wouldn't give that fucking awful stuff to a child so I certainly would drink it myself and then breastfeed.
If I had to drink fizzy drinks I would take the sugar hit rather than risk it. No question
But that may be just me.

I looked up on kellymom about caffeine and bf and was so confused by the half life and different ages that I'm trying to avoid strong coffee altogether. Just have a couple of mugs of tea a day. Can't see why dietcoke has more caffeine than tea but maybe your baby isn't used to it. Maybe she was overtired, my dc1 used to look wide awake when overtired.

LooL00 · 28/07/2010 09:49

ps you'll probably need more caffeine to get through today then mrsgravy!Hope you're not too tired.

MrsGravy · 28/07/2010 10:18

Pagwatch - you're probably right, I have cut down considerably for that reason.

Thanks looloo, I'm not too tired. My lovely husband took over from me - she didn't seem interested in feeding - so I actually did get some sleep!

She's sleeping well this morning so hopefully it was a one off.

I might try and knock the diet coke on the head altogether. I just get bored of drinking water, don't like sugary drinks. Any ideas of anything else I can drink?

Hi MrsGravy

Maybe there was something in the air yesterday! My 4 week old was wide awake ALL day too! He wasn't particularly upset at anything, mostly just looking around, all wide-eyed. I hadn't had any more caffeine than normal, so maybe you don't need to worry about the diet coke.

I was hoping DS would be really sleepy today as a result, but instead I think he's over tired and is just miserable. Poor little thing is at last having a sleep in the sling. I want to sleep in a sling - maybe a hammock on a beach somewhere tropical... rum cocktails... waves lapping the shore... mmmmmmmmm

bitter lemon has a nice 'kick' to it, but it is sugary. I'm into ice cold V8 vegetable juice as a sundowner, but you couldn't drink it all day as it's a bit salty.

MrsGravy · 28/07/2010 11:32

Thank goodness for slings hey TopTrump!! Ooh a hammock on a beach and cocktails...sounds heaven.

I might try the bitter lemon LooLOO but the veg juice sounds a bit too healthy for me
