Help - shooting pains in one breast

Hi has anyone experienced this?

Can't get a doc's appointment for a few days and not sure if I should be worried. DD1 is 10 mths and we've been cutting down on the number of breast feeds a day - now she has a big feed on both sides first thing in the morning, then no bfs all day until about 6pm when we do both sides again for as long as she needs. She has formula for the other daytime feeds and we've been doing BLW.

The last couple of days in the mornings (after feeds not during) I've had intermittent hot shooting pains in my left breast. No redness or swelling but there was a little blood in my milk two days ago (that's now gone). The pains aren't that bad and don't seem to happen at night.

I'm wondering if this could be thrush or mastitis - would it be a good idea to get some canestan to see if that nips it in the bud? Would like to keep up these morning and evening feeds until she's at least a year.

It sounds like thrush to me. Ask your HV and if so you need some gel (can't remember what it's called) that can be rubbed on the breast and will also prevent your DD getting thrush in her mouth.

Thanks for that Kathyjelly. Had no idea there was a special gel.

No signs in her mouth so far and there's a baby clinic on Weds so I can ask there.

shooting pain alone is not a real indicator of thrush

you would expect to see red, often shiny, nipples with soreness. white patches in bay's mouth
shooting pains would be during feeds as well as in between

is she latching on well? a bad latch can cause symptoms very much like thrush

Her latch isn't bad but we've had problems with that in the past (in the first 6 weeks I had bleeding cracked nipples from hell and agonizing pain). Funny thing is the last couple of evenings she's wanted to feed from that side in the craziest positions. We have been feeding lying down in my room as it's quiet and a lovely time for us both and on the right hand side she's happy just to lie there and drink.

On the left the last 2 nights she gets up, climbs all over me, literally kind of doing the downward dog yoga position at times, really pulling my nipple about!!!

It was always the left side that was the most painful in the beginning too in fact. Hmmmmm ...

hmm i wonder if it has a slower letdown or something and she is getting frustrated with it? or something making her a bit uncomfortable lying on that side? teeth maybe

i used to get quite bad pains when i ovulated

sydneysuze · 26/07/2010 23:26

Def think it's a slowcoach. Also think you might be right about the teething - none have appeared yet but she has 'bitten' me a couple of times, again, always on the left side! That was always while we were feeding sitting up though and hasn't happened lying down.

Not sure about the ovulating as I am still lucky enough to be period free ... and do think the pains are related directly to the actual feeding as they always seem to occur in the hour or so afterwards.

Will see how they are tomorrow morning. Thanks so much for helping me
