diarrhoea in BF baby

10 week DS has had explosive green nappies on and off for a week or so, and has gone from one big poo a day to 10 or more of varying sizes and varying shades of yellow/green

Can anyone help? He's otherwise happy, gaining weight and so on (75th centile since birth), but has had a bit of a cold. Could it be that?

I haven't made any dietary changes and he's been fine until now - could something like dairy sensitivity come on suddenly, after weeks of being ok?

any advice really appreciated

Have you eaten anything spicy, or had a lot of citrus fruit/grapes? DD always has funny poos when ill or teething. Horrible question I know, but do the poos smell normal?

louii · 24/07/2010 22:07

Teething gives dodgy poos here.
Are bf poos not always runny though, certainly are with my babies.

I do have a generally quite spicy diet, but it didn't seem to cause any problems (was on the lookout for this from birth, as knew this might upset his belly)

the poos don't smell normal - they smell kind of sicky (sorry!). DD's always smelt like this when she had diarrhoea, so I know it's not "normal" poos that are just a funny colour

Could be down to the cold virus, but you can feel gums and check for teeth. Take him to GP if it continues and you feel worried he is getting dehydrated.

I had thought about teething, as he's been chewing crazily on his hand for about the same amount of time

there aren't any teeth that look close to coming out yet, though

the strange thing is that every so often there'll be a normal-ish poo in there, and I think it's all back to normal, then the next one is even greener than before...

virus' can cause green poo, so could be related to the cold.

We also had a stage of green poos every now and then. If was just once in say every 3, I didn't worry, just kept an eye on it.

Do they occur after a shorter than normal feed?

babynumberthree · 25/07/2010 08:23

We've had similar here - DD has had a cold for the last 3-4 days and unusually large and loud poos woke us(me and DH, not DD) up in the night! Slightly smelly too. Have not changed my diet in any way, so assuming it's due to the cold virus.

pinata · 25/07/2010 18:01

it's very on and off - I'm not sure whether to worry or not, as he's ok other than that.

feeds are as long as usual, drains one whole side, so getting plenty of hind milk

there have been fewer poos overall today, but they are still greenish at best, very green at worst, although they smell slightly less bad

I assume if he was sensitive to something in my diet, it would have affected him right from the start?

My GP is useless when it comes to anything BF related, unfortunately. I think I'll see how he progresses over the next few days
