Day 5 boobs hard and DS sliding off- so frustrated!

Hiya,
Looking for some advice. DS is 5 days old, BF been going well so far. Today however my milk must be in and boobs are full and hard and my nipples won't shape for DS so he just slides back off.
I hand expressed some off earlier, milk poured out and DS was able to latch on however it was coming out so fast he couldn't keep up and slid off due to overflow!
MW came in a while ago and i just sat and broke my heart- she said it was normal, advised i express more off and continue to try feeding him.
I used manual pump and got about 30ml off each side, boobs much softer but flow still too much for DS. He just gets overwhelmed and screams! I can't settle him as i think all he smells is milk. He seems settled for now in DHs arms but will not go down on his own without screaming inconsolably!

Worried about tonight- should i give him the expressed milk via bottle (not used one yet and don't really want to confuse him) or persist with expressing enough off to allow him to latch on and hope the flow slows down?

Any advice anyone?

Also, is it normal for boobs to itch like crazy from inside after expressing?

Thanks in advance

so first off...warm flannel over boobs in bath.

secondly, once you have let down, put muslin against boob and let it come out until the flow slows right down (alternatively catch it in bottle or bowl or whatever!).

both of these should help...i had this problem, a let down that squirted milk across a room! only thing to do is wait til flow slows down. don'g put him on til then.

good luck, looks like you're a natural breastfeeder with plentiful milk! it will all calm down in a few days.

ITs normal honest i agree with sophable, had milk that cud give a stranger a shot in the eye from 100 paces, and felt like bowling balls, it won't take long to sort itself out, try to feed him a little more offen, when hes just making noises about dinner rather than demanding it, maybe offer him before you breasts become so full, tbh if he struggles with the flow from your breast he will most likely have the same problem with a bottle anyway,it honestly won't take long to settle, having said that you might get something similar when he has a growth spurt, but it won't be as bad because he will be older and more experienced by then, a warm bath worked for me, submerged in deep water just let the excess flow, pat dy and then try a feed, you'll be really relaxed too, good luck hun sounds like your doing a cracking job don't give up

Thank you both so much- very reassuring, suppose my hormones are making me feel even more nervous about it all- don't want to fail my wee boy already!

Taken your advice and been for a bath, gave boobs a good soak and hand expressed a little to start the flow then left them to it- a good bit softer now but still very hard inside. Hopefully this feed will help that tho! feel much more chilled out now and about to get the little man up for a feed.

Thanks x

Totally normal and it will calm down soon, good that you have so much milk. This time I actually expressed some into a bottle when my milk came in, so that I could leave him if necessary with DH.

Also can trying feeding lying flat on your back slows the milk down a bit.

I agree about letting the fast stuff out into either a bottle or a muslin and then trying again.

I think at this early stage persist with the breast, hand express first if necessary.
