I am so confused if I write what my 13 day old ds is like can someone please help me...

He has had bad trapped wind since day 2ish. He doesnt cry inconsolably but he cries out in pain, has red face and brings his knees up and goes stiff. He pushes his tongue out complete with a variety of funny faces.
He swallows alot and does a kind of retching face.
We are formula feeding using anti colic bottles, swirling the bottle not shaking, feeding him upright- so doing all the right things I think.
We have tried infacol it worked for a short while and now it doesnt do the trick.
He just seems so unsettled. Is this just newborn baby behaviour or is something up?

I would really appreciate some advice, midwives, pharmacists and spoke to doc on the phone, no one has any advice to give really other than trying these colicef drops? I just have a feeling something isnt quite right(I know that means very little) I feel so terrible I cant make him better I want to know what's wrong- sigh all very confused

TIA

poor little man, and poor you

The main thing is his apparent pain - are you sure he is in pain? Does he ever look content and relaxed?

What does the midwife say?

Is breastfeeding (or a return to breastfeeding) something you'd consider?

thislittlesisterlola · 21/07/2010 20:06

Also he will fall asleep after being winded but only sleep for 20 minsish. Some days are better than others. I am just aware he is so little this could be a phase and I dont want to be paranoid.
My partner and I are very calm when he is in distress as I feel its important for him.
He just cant seem to shift wind but the retching and unsettleness makes me think it could be more? Or is this what wind is like?
Plenty of wet and dirty nappies and feeding well and regularly on a positive note.

Thank you for your quick reply. He does have times of contentment. I would say he is in pain when he has all his knees up and his stiffness.
The midwife I have to say really didnt help me or him he's gaining weight well, feeding and nappies are fine so she isnt worried.
Do you think its just wind? Do some babies just have trouble bringing wind up? Its continual wind though?
Sigh I feel on one hand to let him be and just continue as we are but then paranoid 1st time mum makes me think something isnt right.

On the BF front- another big sigh! Tried so hard had lots of help from the support workers at the hospital he tries to latch on but cant my nipples are flat and now I'm not even sure I have any milk.
He got so frustrated and upset thus making me upset. I just dont know whether I could face it. I dont have the right support to do so either. I cant seem to get him on. I will try again in bed just in a relaxed way to see if he can latch on. I have felt so fussed over with feeding I think maybe just doing it in our own time without the pressure may help.
Tbh I have only started to feel myself again after the birth- sitches pain and bowel issues both ok now.
Sorry I am ranting but does feel better to get it off my chest.

Being stiff with knees up could just be part of a newborn wriggling phase - is he crying when this happens? The crying would indicate something's up, rather than the wriggling and squirming and face-pulling.

He sounds basically healthy and fine - though obv you want him to be happy and relaxed as well.

You didn't answer me about breastfeeding...if breastfeeding was an option for you, it could be worth a try? If you did breastfeed, was he like this with breastfeeding?

Have you seen the health visitor yet?

browneyesblue · 21/07/2010 20:27

The doctor gave DS a prescription for Colief, and it did help quite a lot with his wind - it took a couple of days though. The bottle didn't last very long at all, and I had to wait a day before getting a new (repeat) prescription - all the straining, grunting and crying came back straight away

He's much better again now though, so it's worth a try.

PaulineCampbellJones · 21/07/2010 20:31

Hi, can you hear his tummy gurgle at all and does he get worse when he's lying flat? Sounds very like what my DD had which is silent reflux. It's the same as acid indigestion . Look it up on the net but we got baby Gaviscon from the GP and it worked a treat. Good luck!

thisisyesterday · 21/07/2010 20:33

i was going to suggest silent reflux too, esp with the swallowing and the retching

agree with tiktok that a return to breastfeeding would be possible, if you felt you wanted to do that (ignore this if that's not something you'd consider tho)

where in the country are you~?

thislittlesisterlola · 21/07/2010 20:37

Saw HV yesterday didnt really have anything to say on the matter tbh. I didnt push it with her, maybe I should of.
He is a wriggler but he cries and its more of a panting kind of cry when he brings his legs up etc iyswim not his hungry/ i've pooed cry. When he is like this he only settles with me rubbing his back- though he sometimes cries more when I rub his back while he on my chest sucking a dummy.

Will try the colicef- interesting to know you can get it on prescription as its quite expensive in boots!

I somehow have missed tiktok's post about returning to bf could someone copy it at all?

Silent reflux- ok will look it up. I'll book doc appointment tomorrow. Sorry this is a silly question but what should I say to doc, just everything I have said here? I dont want to come across paranoid but I want to be taken seriously.

He doesnt like to be flat we have a clevamama sleep positioner which says it does help with wind/colic/ relfux. Its like a wedge type thing.

Thank you all for your advice and help I've really needed some support.

Oh - I missed the bit about him retching. Poor little guy

It does sound a lot like reflux, in which case you could just describe the symptoms to the doc, say that you're worried it may be reflux, and ask if Gaviscon would help (a gently, gently approach seems to work best with my GP).

It's really hard when to watch them struggle, but you sound like you're doing all the right things.

tiktok · 21/07/2010 20:50

I didn't do a post - I just asked if returning to breastfeeding would be an option, and if you did breastfeed at all, whether your little boy did the same things.

Just say to the doc you feel sure your baby is uncomfortable/in pain....nothing wrong with saying that at all.

PaulineCampbellJones · 21/07/2010 20:52

Don't worry about being paranoid! I was the same but the doctor did listen (HV didn't help a bit and recommended coelief but I knew it wasn't colic). It's better that you get it checked out and I'm sure you will feel better from having done it.
I found out about silent reflux from Mnet and I'm so glad as it's not something which is widely known about. Have a look here and see if it sounds familiar.
I know a lot of parents are against them but a dummy really helped with it as well as the sleep positioner.

thislittlesisterlola · 22/07/2010 11:39

have infant gaviscon- fingers crossed it helps. Doctor was ok felt slightly patronised but felt ok knowing what i was talking about. Will update. How long does it take to get in their system couple of days?

OP posts:
PaulineCampbellJones · 22/07/2010 12:46

It should start to help straight away but it took a couple of days to be fully effective. Would not use infacol or anything else with it either. We found the DD was also better on the ready made cartons rather than bottles I made up from powder. Hope everything improves for you!

japhrimel · 22/07/2010 12:51

It could be reflux with retching & swallowing. Reflux and trapped wind can be signs of an intolerance too.

thislittlesisterlola · 22/07/2010 17:57

funny you should say that pauline we have just stocked up on cartons. Dont think the powder is helping.
japhrimel intolerance- dp and I dont really get on with cowes milk very well but goat is fine. MW dismissed this and said we shouldnt be concerned. If gaviscon doesnt help we are back next week I will push for a referral. Sigh, its frustrating for him and us I just want him to be better. Its been one thing after another since he was born. Hopefully all will be sorted soon.
Thanks for all the support
