10.5 month old gaining weight too fast

Hi,

Am looking for some advice about my DD. She's 10.5 months old and weighs 23 lbs.

She was 6.6 at birth and her weight gain was very slow for the first 5 months.

Since weaning however, she has shot up. She has an enormous appetite, loves meal times and will and does eat anything.

She is still breastfed and as we co-sleep she is feeding a lot at night. She very rarely goes more than about 4 hours without wanting a feed, day or night.

On top of this she has breakfast, lunch and some dinner (all ordinary, home-cooked food, lots of fruit and veg etc).

Her weight is within the normal range but she has jumped up the centiles so quickly in the last few months that the HV says she needs to be checked out. I have to keep a food diary and possibly see a dietician.

I'm worried. Is she eating too much? Should I be trying to cut back the BF, especially at night? HV seemed to think so.

Any advice would be so appreciated...I'm feeling a bit down about it

TIA

how mobile is she? crawling? cruising?

23 lbs doesn't sound particularly big - ds was 21lbs at 6 months. She could be having a growth spurt. Is she in proportion?

Well as you're still bf (and therefore shouldn't be able to overfeed from a milk point of view) and you're not stuffing her with mars bars at meal times, I would try not to worry too much.

If she has jumped up the centiles in "the last few months" it's not even that quick is it? As MrsBadger asked, it would be interesting to know if she's moving, because that sometimes is the cause of slow weight gain at around that age but if she's eating loads and just sitting there she is more likely to be putting the weight on.

So not walking yet?

Perfectly normal for babies to pile on weight at this age (in my experience anyway) growth spurts, new foods, etc and not walking yet.

I wouldnt' worry, seriously!

Hi,

Thank you for the reponses!

She is crawling, standing and seems to be getting ready to walk. She is v. active, always on the go. It's a struggle to get her to nap during the day as she loves to be on the go.

She is all in proportion, wearing the 'right' size clothes for her age group.

Her weight gain was v. slow for the first 6 months and since weaning it has just shot up. The HV said her development could be affected if she does continue the same way...

I'm not normally one to be flummoxed by this sort of thing, but I really don't want her to be hindered in any way.

Thank you for the reassurances

I was worried that I really was doing something out of the ordinary with her feeding...I feel better reading your replies. Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry. DS2 (11 months) is 23 pounds. He grew really fast and has slowed down to the 75th centile from the 99th. They don't all grow in a straight line. She's developing normally - pulling up and cruising - why worry?

MarthaLovesMatthew · 20/07/2010 09:36

Thanks porridge.

She is a normal happy healthy baby, but the indication that she could somehow run into problems in the future if her weight gain continues at the same pace really bothered me.

But deep down I know it is completely irrational to expect all babies to grow and develop in a uniform fashion.

The responses here have made me feel better. I just wanted a bit of confirmation that I wasn't doing anything drastically wrong re. feeding during the night.
