I was all set to come on to MN this morning (I'm in Australia) and ask for advice after trying EVERYTHING I could to get rid of a big lump in my right breast that's been there for the last few days - tried feeding from that side first each time, copious massaging, combing in shower, expressing, hot water bottle, hot flannels, feeding in a number of crazy positions, checking for little white spots on my nipple, etc. etc. But DS has just got rid if it this last feed!!! I love him even more than ever now the nasty, painful lump has gone. Ahhhhhhhhh!

Okay, mainl I am just delighted and sharing it with you all, but I did want to know if anyone had any tips for avoiding recurrent lumpy breasts? I seem to get one every week, same spot, same breast, and I'm not entirely sure what is getting rid of it. I had a great nights sleep last night (7 week old DS slept from 8pm - 1.30pm in one stretch!!!! Amazing!!!), so I'm sort of wondering if that has anything to do with it? The lumps make me miserable and, at their most painful, make me feel like giving up BF (but I won't - I just force myself to remember the fab feeling when the lump goes).

Advice gratefully received!

Is it possible that your bra is digging in to that area of your boob? I've had trouble with is myself, always the same area, always after wearing a certain bra....

Also sometimes if I go from a cradle hold to a rugby hold sometimes certain ducts don't drain as well...

As tw1nkley says, lumps are often due to something pressing into the breast, particularly while feeding. If you tend to hold your breast while feeding, or if anything else tends to press on it, it can stop those ducts from draining.

The long sleep may well be a cause, too.

Feeding your baby with his chin to the lump clears lumps beautifully, ime.

I get a lump under my nipple if I haven't fed for a while,So it is probably your ds having a long sleep which caused it.
If I know I am not going to feed for a few hours I sometimes just hand express each side for a couple of minutes just to relieve the pressure.
