so when my little one approaches 6 months...I can start introducing food..but no cows milk until one year old....so do you use formula to make porridge? what does a baby drink with food breast milk after or before food? or water? I am getting on so well with breastfeeding that this food bit seems so confusing.... how do you experienced women feed baby from 6-12 months... ps- I also need baby to be weaned off breast at 10 months as I am returning to work.

Hi, I think you can use cows milk on cooking if you like once they eat food. I went straight onto finger foods, lots of fruits, veggies and other bits and pieces and carried on feeding on demand too. I also offered water with meals but not much went in at first!

Not to pressure you but you don't have to stop breastfeeding when you go back to work if you don't want to - you can give formula for day feeds or some babies don't bother with milk and just catch up when they are reunited. I went back a bit later (12 months) and carried on feeding in the evenings and we are still going strong!

Hope this helps

Babyphat is right - you can use cow's milk in food, just not as a drink until 1 year. And also that if you are going back to work at 10 months, it's quite likely that your baby will be on two feeds a day by then so you might not need to wean him off breastfeeding at all if you don't want to.

I gave DS water with his meals, he didn't really drink it until he was eating more at 8 or 9 months, but it doesn't matter too much. I just kept on feeding him on demand (or you could stick to your feeding routine if you have one) and then I offered him a bit of what we were eating when we had meals, it's recommended you don't cut down on milk until 8 or 9 months, unless they cut down on it by themselves. They need the solids in addition to the milk, not replacing it until they are a little bit older.
