Nipple shields, tongue tie and stolen cars

Hello,

I have a 5week old DS who after much agonising bf-ing has been diagnosed with tongue tie. Have just tried using nipple shields on the advice of a bf councellor but I found the little man sucks so hard he breaks the seal, the edge of the shield wrinkles and I'm paranoid he's going to suck the whole thing in and choke - anyone had the same thing happen?
It all seems to be going wrong at the moment - I thought I was going to be good at this motherhood business and to cap it all my car was stolen at the weekend complete with car seat and my sanity - help!!!

I sued them for DS1. Im pretty sure that they cant be swallowed they will have been designed with that in mind. the seal does break. I used to hold it in place.

sorry about your car.

Is getting the tongue tie snipped an option?

What happens if he feeds without the shields?

Nipple shields come in a range of sizes, did the BF counsellor discuss your options?

CarGirl · 13/07/2010 18:07

I had to get teeny tiny nipple shields!

I would ask for a referral to get his tongue tie snipped urgently, been there, done that it made a huge difference instantly.

I didn't realise they came in different sizes - where did you get your teeny tiny ones CarGirl?
I am going to get his tt snipped, but a week is a terribly long time when bf-ing is sooo painful!

they were medela ones, got them off the internet or the pharmacy ordered them in - took a few days, TT referral took 3 weeks as it got lost - I remember screaming with the pain sometimes!

It's 8 years ago so it's hard to remember. I donated mine to the bf counsellors when I finally had my last child!

Hi
My dd is 15 days old .
Bf constantly for days and lost weight and i`m an experienced mum and midwife so knew something was wrong.
Minor tongue tie diagnosed Monday and snipped Fri-put straight to breast and fed effectively for the first time within seconds of the procedure .
48 hours later my milk finally came in properly (now talking day 11 ish !), and dd heard gulping and settled after feeds.
Her and my life totally changed for the better 100 % .
You need to ask your hosp to put you in touch urgently with their lactation consultant who can refer you for tongue tie release.
If there isnt one you can get it done privately from between 60-150 pounds .
If you go down the gp route it will take too long.
Even a minor tongue tie can have a huge negative effect on feeding as the tongue cant strip the milk effectively / or stimulate your breastrs to make more milk. Hence sore nipples from poor latch, reduced milk supply and constantly unsettled baby.

Sorry if im a bit waffly but havent much time-and im really sorry about your car-but you can overcome this its sortable xxx

My eldest had a mild tongue-tie (now 4 years old). I (and consequently my husband) had a miserable 10 weeks after she was born and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I nearly lost my sanity. I kept going as I read that breastfeeding would help stretch the tongue tie which I think it must have by 10 weeks as the pain decreased around this time and she seemed to move her tongue more. When she was 3 weeks I reluctantly decided to combine bfeeding and expressing. I would bfeed until I was in tears with a flattened whitened nipple, then feed her what I had expressed from the end of the previous feed, then express what was left from my current feed to give her at the next feed after the tears had started by which time it was nearly time to do the whole thing over again - not recommended! I got all the info about tongue-ties from LaLeche website as HV couldn't tell me what the problem was and didn't think the tongue-tie could be causing the problem (she was an experienced Bfeeder herself and was great otherwise). I ended up bfeeding my daughter for 16 months.
My daughter had it snipped aged 3 when she had an anaesthetic to insert vents in her ears. Nipple shields were no help to me. If I ever have another child with a tongue-tie I wouldn't hesitate to get it snipped asap whatever the cost. Hang in there. My sympathy won't ease the pain but you have it nonetheless.

Thanks everyone,
I'm in London and my bf supporter is referring me to Kings, hopefully it will be soon and effective in 'minutes'! I feel better knowing there's a real problem - not just me having a too-low pain threshold.
My OH is going to look for a car this weekend :-)
