Am doing a couple of KIT days a work, yesterday and today. My Mum is looking aftr DS2, who has been happily drinking the expressed milk.

Went at lunchtime yesterday to John Lewis (10 mins walk work) to the parents room to express milk. Told my boss today about my need for a long lunch break, and he said it has totally freaked him out.

  • he is not easily embarassed -

Did not want to express at work as would be mortified if anyone saw me even a woman and not prepared to pump milk that I want to keep inside a toilet cubicle (fine if dumping).

I think your work has to provide somewhere private, secure/lockable and clean for you to express by the way. Mine made the first aid room availiable for me which was comfy and had a fridge to store it in...

You are protected under health and safety legislation at work, mumNWlondon, and your boss has to provide somewhere clean and comfortable for you to express.

Why should John Lewis subsidise your workplace's lack of compliance with the law?!

Your boss is easily embarrassed if he freaks out at the mention of someone expressing.

Maybe speak to HR about the facilities, and your boss's attitude? If he continues to show his discomfort, he might have to be warned about sex discrimination....

I know work have to provide a room and I know am protected under legislation.

I also know it wouldn't be a problem if I spoke to HR.

He's my age and doesn't have kids. He knows I am BFing as I took baby to visit and work and he sorted out a room for me to feed etc. But it wouldn't have crossed his mind that a consequence of me coming in for a whole day would be the need to express. I have never seen him speachless before!

Its only a couple of days hence happy to walk down to Oxford Street. Obviously if it was any more than this would speak to HR.

Was just amused and a bit but his attitude.

Well to be fair to him I had never heard of expressing milk before I had a baby so can sort of understand his confusion. Lots of women don't discuss breast feeding/expressing milk until they become pregnant or give birth so can appreciate that a man may never have given the subject any thought.
