Toddler and tummy bug

DS is 21 months and seems to have a tummy bug. He's been very sick twice and is now just being sick every time I breastfeed him (ie just bringing up the milk and a little bit of his tea from earlier). He is refusing water. Is it okay to keep feeding him or is it a bad idea? He's not weeing very much and I am worried he might be getting dehydrated.

Also if anyone knows the signs of dehydration which mean that I should take him to A&E I'd be interested to know - I only know signs of dehydration in babies.

I can't imagine there is anything better you could be giving him TBH.

Keep feeding as much as you can, really is the best thing for him. DS got a D&V bug at about the same age and went back to just breastmilk for about 48 hrs, where previously he'd been just having one feed a day.

You can offer other fluids, but I found that bm seemed to stay down better - DS was at one point throwing up water.

OK, thanks. He's had some water now as well. I'm just letting him decide what he wants really

Hope he feels better soon, horrible when they're ill isn't it?

BertieBotts · 11/07/2010 20:43

Yeah not nice for him He has brought up the water too but seemed less distressed by it. I can't get him to sip it, he's just gulping. do you think giving it to him in a baby bottle might help with this?

Not really used baby bottles - would he use a straw?

BertieBotts · 11/07/2010 21:04

I haven't got any straws in the house, he does know how to drink from one but tends to drink loads at a time with one. I will try the bottle I think - he occasionally has cow's milk in one which he feeds himself so should know what to do.
