As the title suggests - just want something I can really get stuck into. Nothing too heavy, but something well written. I quite like mystery/ crime but not the stuff that's churned out. Can like autobiographical type stuff if it's interesting. Can anyone recommend something they'd say is absolutely brilliant that they think most people would like. Tall order I know. Also, doesn't need to be a latest bestseller - something from years ago that is really good I'm quite open to. Thanks in advance

Have you read the Cormoran Strike series?

dentaldilema · 20/10/2025 18:00

The nightingale by Kristin Hannah is an oldie but a great book. I also really enjoyed the Pat Barker series: the women of Troy, the silence of the girls, and the voyage home but I know that style of book isn’t for everyone.

Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London series - urban fantasy (apparently) set in London (obviously). Lots of myths and history, with a murder to solve.

siansattic · 20/10/2025 18:02

I've just finished The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams and really enjoyed it.

Have you read any books by Laura Shepherd-Robinson? Crime thrillers set in 1700/1800s - brilliant story writing mixing a fictional story with historical events of the time - this is just one of her cracking books

Totally different but I find any of Adele Parks are easy reads but not immediately obvious what the ending is

I've really enjoyed
The Sealwoman's Gift Sally Magnusson
American Dirt Jeannine Cummins
When the Dust Settles Lucy Easthope
Paper Cup Karen Campbell

Another for Kristin Hannah

KylieKangaroo · 21/10/2025 21:38

I've just read Mongrel by Hanako Footman, it's one of the best books I've read in a long time and I'm sad that it's finished now. Would definitely recommend.

Stowickthevast · 21/10/2025 21:54

A couple of new ones that I've enjoyed are The Book of Guilt and The Names, both quite twisty and good page turners.

Scootergrrrl · 21/10/2025 21:55

The Last Thing To Burn by Will Dean. Absolutely awesome!

lilybit2025 · 21/10/2025 21:55

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo has been and will be one of the best books I've read. Very easy to read, brilliantly written and not what you expect at all - really good plot twists and just great all around

It’s so good isn’t it? I’m looking forward to the film although concerned they won’t do it justice

Peclet · 21/10/2025 22:04

The marriage portrait- Maggie o Farrell
this must be the place- as above

anything by that author. But those are her best imo.

the secret history- Donna tartt

Neighneigh · 21/10/2025 22:04

Agree on Pat Barker, but I've also recently discovered Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway series and really really like them. Also Robert Harris' Second Sleep is excellent

Yes, it's amazing, so glad someone else appreciates it as much as me Grin I recommend it to so many people and so many people never read it. What I'd do to read it again!

I've seen it advertised, I'm truly hoping like you say it lives up to the book but majority of films these days never do!

CharlotteCChapel · 21/10/2025 22:06

I've recently read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It's a book that I didn't want to end.

crazylittlethingcalledlife · 14/04/2026 20:43

A gentleman in Moscow, Amos Toles, best book ever

HalzTangz · 14/04/2026 22:35

I love the DCI Matilda Drake book set written by Michael Wood, few good play twists. 10 or 11 books in the set. Highly highly recomend

Pippatpip · 25/04/2026 16:54

Saltblood. Is absolutely fantastic

Daisyinthegrass · 29/04/2026 09:54

Body Language by AK Turner, I really enjoyed that one. There's a few books in the series which are on my 'to read' pile.

Unnatural Causes by Richard Shepherd, autobiography about his work as a pathologist. He talks about some well-known cases.

Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination by Helen Fielding. A comedy about a journalist trying to uncover terrorist plots.

I really enjoyed Lesley Pearse books too. They can be quite heavy but they are really enjoyable.

Dazedandconfus · 29/04/2026 10:04

I agree with a lot that have already been mentioned but would also add:

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams (true story about her career at Facebook)
Blue Sisters - Coco Mellors
The Handmaids Tale - Margaret Atwood
The Testaments - Margaret Atwood (sequel to the above)
The People on Platform 5 - Clare Pooley
When Breath Becomes Air - Paul Kalanithi (memoir of a doctor - very moving)

I've just stared When the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
