Wasn’t sure where to put this question.

i have the habit of buying books and not quite finishing them. I’m keen to find THE ONE (book that is).

there are so many out there, which one has made a difference to your life? I like the sound of Mel Robins’ Let Them.

thank you!

7 Habits of Highly Effective people - read it 23 odd years ago and it was brilliant.

LaMarschallin · 26/07/2025 19:34

"Sink Reflections" by Marla Cilley (aka Flylady).
Sorted my house out.

"Warnings of Gales" by Annie Sanders. Rubbishy, chick-lit novel but I identified strongly with two of the three main characters and felt fabulous. I channel one or other of them when I need extra oomph.

"Nigella Bites" because she says when she's making meatballs and pasta she fantasises about being Sophia Loren. So I learnt to fantastise about being various people when cooking. Some of the recipes are good too, especially the potatoes Dauphinoise*.

A friend says she found "Who Moved My Cheese?" really good. I thought it was crap but she seems nice and well-rounded so there you are. You might love it.

*And the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

I didn’t realise that about Mel Robbins Dive.

Agree about HTWF&IP too Screaming. Think it was written in 1936 and it might have been in print continuously since then. I must reread it Smile

The courage to be disliked was good and I still apply the theory now which isn’t true of many others.

Another oldie but goodie - Dale Carnegie’s ‘How to win friends and influence people’ was life changing for me in my 20s when I couldn’t escape the trap of being unhappy and lonely. It was written in the 50s (I think) but still has a lot to say about having a more positive outlook. It’s still an Amazon bestseller even today - that’s how powerful it is!

Edited

You're in good company, this is also Donald Trump's favourite book!

(By 'good' I mean racist, misogynistic, narcissistic.)

NutellasKitchen · 10/08/2025 11:38

Again, not exactly a self-help book, and very readable but did have real worth for me - the Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Really helped when I needed to feel more positive about the paths I had taken through life.

Paetina · 11/08/2025 16:38

Another fan of Your Money or your Life here. Also they F* You Up (Oliver James) - not the book itself but because it lead me to do something called the Hoffman Process which has really positively impacted my life.

I also really recommend The Ophaned Adult by Alexander Levy- really helped when both my parents died within 6 months of each other.

OllyBJolly · 11/08/2025 16:44

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers changed my life. I recommend it to everyone.

I’ve recently enjoyed Dr Julie’s Why didn’t anyone tell me this book, really helpful and interesting with actual real examples of things to try. Easily broken up into chapters for each particular issue so it’s easy to dip in and out of.

I also loved Glennon Doyle Untamed, it is full of amusing little stories from her life along with life changing advice. Really relatable and down to earth, and made me think a lot.

I made notes all the way through both!

I've just bought & started Untamed on your recommendation. Excellent so far!

Please don't bother with Mel Robbins the plagiarist.

She didn't credit the poet Cassie B Phillip which is where she ripped off her work from.

All you need to read is Cassie's poem "Let Them." It says it all.

"Who moved my cheese" really helped me when I was stuck in a rut.

afraidberry · 13/08/2025 09:47

whilst I know for a certain age group : Panic Years by Nell Frizzell and Figuring out Thirty by Bridget Hustwaite

I also enjoyed Ikigai for more general self help

Anything by Oliver Burke Burkeman.

I was about to post this.

He's anti glib transform your life right now and instead reads all the stuff and pulls out the useful bits for less than perfect people.

"Mediations for Mortals" is his latest. Very good.

suburberphobe · 20/10/2025 23:00

Feel the Fear and do it Anyway.

Women who love too much
The six pillars of self esteem
Why does he do that

All three ought to be required reading for women.

Yes Women who love to much and Co- Dependent No More, really helped me to understand what is a healthy relationship and i have choices .Changed my whole thinking .
ill check out your other two recommendations.

rickyrickygrimes · 31/10/2025 04:22

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. Read it 25 years app and it totally changed my thinking about a lot of things.

How to Be a Stoic by Masson Pigliucci. Far less ‘American’ than Ryan Holliday, very clear and definitely inspiring. Again it changed my perspective on a lot of things, and it really stuck - which is the sign of a good self help book for me.

Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff - read it over and over, and I wanted to by a copy for several people in my life 😂

Atomic Habits - couldn’t get on with that one at all, though DH liked it.

Whippetwonder · 31/10/2025 05:11

The bulimia help method..was invaluable to me ..for obvious reasons

Greysowhat · 08/11/2025 17:28

Easy Way to Stop Smoking - Allen Carr
Read it once, stopped smoking, never looked back!

Epli · 13/11/2025 11:27

I have two recommendations, both of them made me rethink what and how I spend my time:

'Deep work' by Cal Newport - it really made a difference to how I work and how I approach social media

These are not self-help books, but I found them inspiring enough to make changes in my life: 'On the move' by Oliver Sacks & 'Insomniac City' by Bill Hayes. The first one is a memoir by Sacks, the second is a memoir of his partner and roughly half of it is describing his relationship with Sacks. I think they complement each other nicely. I find Sacks very inspiring - he seemed to live his life to the fullest, focusing on what brought him joy without giving in to the distractions of the modern world.
