Try M. R. James. If you don't know much about him, watch Mark Gatiss' superb documentary. I think it's on youtube.

TrueScrumptious · 04/07/2023 16:55

Real Victorian, like Dracula or The Woman In White? Or modern books set in the Victorian age, like Affinity?

FeltCarrot · 04/07/2023 16:58

Laura Purcell, The Silent Companions?

Marylou62 · 04/07/2023 17:01

Hahahaha..was just coming on to post about a book series by Ben Aaranovich..the first being
'Rivers of London '...
It's brilliant.. I'm on book 7 of 9 (I read them out of order..)
They are very clever and so funny in places...
Thoroughly recommend it...

Marylou62 · 04/07/2023 17:03

Just realized you said Victorian...this is modern but set in London...

RomanMum · 12/07/2023 17:00

Paraic O Donnell - the House on Vesper Sands.

Lamelie · 12/07/2023 17:07

A little stranger
Wuthering Heights
Woman in Black

CatChant · 12/07/2023 17:24

MR James’ Collected Ghost Stories
The Collected Ghost Stories of EF Benson
The Virago Book of Victorian Ghost Stories
In the Dark: Tales of Terror by E Nesbit
The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton

SideWonder · 12/07/2023 17:48

Sheridan le Fanu, Carmila (fantastic lesbian vampire story - Irish rather than Scottish ...)
Bram Stoker, Dracula (of course)
Florence Marryat's slightly mad ghost/vampire novels - there are a couple of specialist academic presses who have re-released her novels
Wilkie Collins of course
Henry James, Turn of the Screw. Bloody scary if you get into it

Butterchunks · 12/07/2023 17:51

Affinity by Sarah Waters

Hoolihan · 12/07/2023 17:51

The Essex Serpent

SideWonder · 12/07/2023 17:55

Do you want actual nineteenth century, or neo-Victorian?

Many many 19th century novels have an element of the supernatural - Jane Eyre for example, and Wuthering Heights. Then there's Frankenstein, and Polidori's The Vampyre.

And then the whole of Gothic literature, perhaps starting with Walpole's Castle of Otranto. Very occult.

Everything above, especially MR James, Ambrose Bierce, Poe (who’s weird), EH Benson and actually Bram Stoker has some good uns. Also compendiums of “Victorian Ghost Stories” or vampire stories (and Edwardian) will see you right. I have them scattered round my flat so that I can read them in bed, on the loo, in the shower (that didn’t work!) etc

Laura Amy Schlitz's Splendors & Glooms. It is a YA/crossover book.

ChocolateCherries · 15/07/2023 16:13

Luckenbooth by Jenni Fagan is great and ticks all your boxes.

I just finished Ordinary Monsters by J.m. Miro. Steampunk fantasy in Scotland and London.

Charlattanus23 · 10/09/2023 16:11

She's fallen into relative oblivion in recent years, and some of her, er, heroes and plots are absolutely ghastly by the standards of the 2020s, but if it's over-the-top-Victorian Gothic you're after, I'd definitely recommend Victoria Holt.

You could also have a look at some of the books Mary Stewart or Phyllis A. Witney wrote.

And while they're not Victorian Gothic, there are some pretty atmospheric novels by Barbara Michaels and Dinah Lampitt. If there are particular authors you really like you could also give this link a go, it's terrific fun anyway - https://www.literature-map.com/

Things in Jars by Jess Kidd ticks the boxes.

cassiatwenty · 20/04/2024 08:14

The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell (a brilliant writer)

R00tat00tt00t · 28/04/2024 16:02

I'll second Luckenbooth by Jenni Fagan.
Supernatural, historic (set over several time periods), LGBTQ, quite dark. All set in a haunted/cursed Edinburgh tenement.
