What other books would you recommend?
I like female protagonists and don’t mind dystopian novels, as long as they are not too “sci-fi” iyswim.
Currently reading The Testaments.

I enjoyed Vox and The Power - two feminist dystopian novels

KayDog · 30/12/2022 15:55

Margaret Atwood in general, particularly Cat's Eye and Life Before Man

butterfliedtwo · 30/12/2022 15:56

Another one for The Power.

LampHat · 30/12/2022 15:56

The Blind Assassin, my favourite book ever

Place marking for suggestions!

The Men by Sandra Newman is interesting

ditalini · 04/01/2023 19:22

I wonder if Faye Weldon's (RIP) work has held up? I loved Life and Loves of a She Devil.

Bernadinetta · 04/01/2023 19:22

The Children of Men by PD James

Right up my street!! Great suggestions above and I’ll add anything Atwood especially Oryx and Crake trilogy but also read recently Klara and the Sun - kazuo Ishiguro, The Unit - Ninni Holmqueist, Vox - Christine Dalcher, Red Clocks - Leno Zumas and The Farm - Joanne Ramos. I’d love some more suggestions too 😊

Aworldofmyown · 04/01/2023 19:33

The power is a good one.

Crackstone · 04/01/2023 19:35

Ii was also coming on to say The Power. Not in the same league as The Handmaids Tale but very good.

Station Eleven is also good

planefullofotters · 04/01/2023 19:37

Some great suggestions here. I’m currently enjoying Girl One

Blinky21 · 25/01/2023 22:01

The School For Good Mothers, Jessamine Chan

Another one for The Power - feminist, thought provoking, dystopian in parts only.

I'd also recommend

Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neil- definitely dystopian, it's chilling but very well written.

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, amazing short story collection based on folk tales, very feminist sensibility, amazing writing.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, based on a true story of a women who is executed in 19th century Iceland - fantastic book, not sci-fi but a difficult and almost alien landscape.
