Can anyone recommend some good books for my 11 year old dd please?

She loves reading, but is now bored with the usual mystery type books that are aimed at her age group.

I need to find something a bit more exciting for her, yet still age appropriate! Thank you.

Gallagher girls spy novels ( I loved them as much as my daughter!)
Or what about Agatha Christie? An Hercule Poirot one - 'Cat Among the Pigeons' is the one set in a girls boarding school. I still remember my joy on reading the school book report ( ....this book features the murder of a gym teacher which is very interesting to a person of my age...)GrinGrin

Or if she would like fantasy, the David Eddings series the Belgariad ( first one is Pawn of Prophecy) might suit. Nothing very age inappropriate- I think my daughter devoured the whole set one summer when she was about that age
My niece preferred travel books. Still loves Bill Bryson.

Smartiepants79 · 25/09/2022 20:10

Has she read Percy Jackson. The school for good and evil. Both huge faves of my 12 yea old.
His dark materials.
The warrior cat series if she’s into animals.
the classics? Little women

Morrigan Crow series by Jessica Townsend. It's fantasy and really good. I enjoyed them too. Gutted the next one isn't out until next year though.

Fudge by Judy Blume. This book series is full of hilarious scenarios about a silly family.

Cruisinforcroissant · 25/06/2023 00:11

Hunger games series. Books are excellent and well written

Yes, Agatha Christie is great. Maybe 11 is too young – depends on her reading abilities, I guess. Also, if she gets into Agatha Christie, she might like Sherlock Holmes.

I'd recommend

Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials
Tolkien: The Hobbit
Roald Dahl: Boy (I loved this so much when I was a kid)
Kipling: The Jungle Book

One of my great pleasures is listening to Stephen Fry read P. G. Wodehouse and Sherlock Holmes on audiobook. She might be a bit young to actually read them (like I said, I don't know her reading abilities), but she'll enjoy hearing them read by a master. Stephen Fry brings them alive.

In my professional opinion themes in the Hunger games are too old for an 11 year old. Otherwise some great suggestions here.

I'll add little house on the prairie series and Charlotte Sometimes.

MariaVT65 · 26/06/2023 21:05

I’ll go in a different direction and say the princess diaries!

Has she read harry potter?

Hi just to say it was on the reading list for 11+ aged kids being pre- assessed for 13+ schools. So defo age appropriate for the right kids. Every kid is different.
the common sense media rating - which I think is pretty accurate and a good guide usually I find says 12

I see it recommended for this range often. Having read it myself I disagree.

Book trust say 13+ and proceed with caution. https://www.booktrust.org.uk/book/t/the-hunger-games/

As you say it is important to know the child you are recommending it to.

The Hunger Games

Welcome to Panem: its Capitol repressively rules twelve satellite Districts, enslaving the populations as workers and controlling them through hunger.

Why Can't she go to the library and choose her own books?

HollyGolightly4 · 26/06/2023 23:07

'A Kind of Spark', Elle McNicholl- lovely TV series too.

Diana Wynne Jones books

Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd

The light in everything by Katya Balen

JesusWeptLady · 15/07/2023 15:31

I was also going to recommend The Hunger Games. I know its a bit strong meat in places but both my kids (b&g) read them around age 10

My DD and her friends loved Hating Alison Ashley, by Australian writer Robin Klein. It's a brilliant social comedy set in the narrator's final year of primary school.

A PP mentioned Charlotte Sometimes, a classic time- slip story. If your DD likes it, she might also like Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park, Tom's Midnight Garden by Phillipa Pearce, and Down A Dark Halll by Lois Duncan.

@Cherrysherbet how about The Evolution of Calpurnia Tatee*? The protagonist is 11 Wink

Robin Klein is superb.
