Does anyone still read Jilly Cooper?

In the bath tub like me 😉

Hasn't she got a new one coming out soon about football?

I wish!
She mentioned it a few times years back, but no news recently.
The only recent thing from her was another collection of journalistic pieces (something like "Between the Covers").

It was going to be called "Score!" and she did some interviews with Forest Green (the vegan team) players.
Presumably it would have been based around Feral and Bianca with Valent and/or his son owning the team.
Hope it does come out but I'm not holding my breath.

Looking back, I see I've repeated myself in my 1st and 2nd posts on the thread.
Perhaps I need reminding the Pearl's father is a boxer!

51 and I've never read a Jilly Cooper! 🙈 Which one should I read first?

Riders (lots of horses and lots of bonking, what could be better?)
Rivals - about a TV consortium with lots of bonking and some of the same characters from Riders.
Polo - about POLO and bonking - are you sensing a recurring theme? 😄

After that I sort of am ambivalent about the rest of them

All the above were written between 1985-1991.

There were a series of books JC wrote in the 1970s all with the titles of girl's names, eg: Emily, Harriet, Octavia, Bella etc. I enjoyed reading them when I was young, they are a bit like Mills and Boon only better written, more amusing and with vastly more sex.

The Common Years is a lovely book about the 10 years she lived on the edge of Putney Common, written in the 90s. It is a sort of diary about her daily walks on the common with her dogs and the people she meets, sounds dull, but it is a good read.

I re-read that a couple of months back.
It has got some lovely, lyrical descriptions of the common and its flora and fauna.
Also some very funny passages.

However, reading now I'm older, I realised that her dogs killed cats and (at least) one other dog as she was very bad at keeping them on the lead and/or training them.
Would be a interesting thread on MN.

The other thing I hadn't known was that the episode in "Imogen" where Imogen gets high and writes swear words and insults on Yvonne's car, was based on something Jilly herself did - when drunk, not high - to a neighbour's car.

"Turn Left at the Spotted Dog" is another good collection of her pieces based on her early days in Gloucestershire.

The 'name' books are my comfort reads when I'm ill or fed up. Otherwise my favourite is Rivals; hasn't aged at all well but still somehow irresistable.

You're in good, author-ly company.
Ian Rankin has said a couple of times that it's his favourite book.

RockStarMartini · 16/06/2022 12:55

Love her earlier stuff especially the Common Years and the name books and the first 4 Rutshire books are great but she’s gone seriously downhill since then with sloppy repetitive writing, awful puns, unreal characters and THAT scene/word in the latest RCB book 😩

Libre2 · 16/06/2022 13:03

They have aged really badly, particularly in on the subject of male-female relationships, but they are still highly readable!

ChessieFL · 16/06/2022 13:05

I love Jilly! Agree that the later Rutshire books are not as good as the earlier ones and Wicked! in particular has some very dodgy moments in it. The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous and Rivals are my favourites. I also like the music ones, Appassionata and Score!

The football book, if it ever appears, is due to be called Tackle! (not Score!, which she’s already written!). I’ve found an article from February this year where she says it’s going slowly so who knows if/when it will appear.

I’ve never read one of hers, might have to try one. I’m into my retro books at the moment. Currently reading Rosamunde Pilchers again.

I read The Shell Seekers as a teen and loved it. Re-reading it now and the characters are not as I remember them. So unlikeable!

Arrgh! You're right, of course Blush

Looking on the positive side, maybe I'm slightly less obsessed than I thought.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 16/06/2022 13:10

Have just bought a copy of Rivals off the back of this thread. Looking forward to a juicy read.

Norachance · 16/06/2022 13:21

I would read the Rutshire chronicles in order or at least Riders first just to get to know the characters and background. I love Rivals too. Also The Man who made husbands jealous ( Great way to lose weight 😂)

Sunflowers765 · 16/06/2022 13:35

Rivals and riders were the best. Then she started writing books with a trillion characters that were all "known as" something or other which I found really annoying. I mean who is deciding what all these characters are known as ? That would never happen. It used to drive me crazy! I pretty much gave up with jilly once we got past the man who made husbands jealous. Too many characters I couldn't keep up with and certainly didn't care about. First books were great - loved the Taggie and Rupert story in Rivals -re read this one loads of times.

Do you know I'd completely forgotten about her dogs killing the cat. I don't know how because even at the time I was shocked at how irresponsible she was at letting the dogs off the lead all the time when their recall was non existent. I must re-read it, got a copy somewhere I think, although after a few house moves I've realised I've not seen it for a while.

Imogen is one of the "name" books I've not read, so must remedy that😊. I agree with the poster who says those books are perfect when you want some feel good, comfort reading.

I'm going to order the kindle version of Lisa & Co which is 99p at the moment and which I've been wanting to read for a while.

I love this thread❤️.

Theredjellybean · 03/07/2022 15:15

I love jilly....
i also recently discovered Rebecca Chance..a sort of more modern Jilly Cooper, terribly funny in places, especially the characters that are thinly veiled copies of our dear royal family, the one with the plot about Princess Diana faking her death ( she is called Princess Melody or something like that) is priceless.

Theredjellybean · 03/07/2022 15:17

"Every little girl grows up dreaming of finding a prince - but what is the fairy tale turns into a right royal nightmare?
Lori is a beautiful, blonde, all-American athlete. When the charismatic ruler of a small, filthy rich European state asks for her hand, she thinks she's snagged Prince Charming. But she soon realizes that all that glitters is not gold...
Belinda was once the most recognized and loved princess in the world. Forced to stage her own death, she lives incognito abroad with her adoring royal lover. Now, she is determined to return to England to see her son Hugo wed, even if it means risking her own life.
Chloe, Prince Hugo's fiancée, is the archetypical English rose. But it's a long road to becoming a princess, even when you're dating the heir to the throne. Perhaps the fairy-tale ending isn't all it was cracked up to be...
Killer queens, scheming kings, murder plots and lashings of steamy sex - find out what REALLY goes on behind closed palace doors."

this is the plot..its called Killer Queens - i would recommend for Jilly lovers

burnoutbabe · 27/02/2023 15:54

i am trying to re-read Mount and just think GAH nope. I recall the general plot and its just not interesting anymore.

I did love them up to around Score (murder mystery) and then Wicked (children having sex) and Jump (poor rubbish etta) and Mount were all lacking.

Shame. But would enjoy Rivals again.

Sagittariusrising · 05/10/2023 11:23

It's finally being published Tackle in time for Christmas.

Given her age I suspect it may be the last one so I hope it's good. I've pre-ordered as I want the complete set.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 11:27

I remember glancing into DD's room when she was about 9 or 10 and she was in bed reading Riders. I think I might have asked about it on here!

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 11:28

Rivals is my favorite.

It’s a lifestyle magazine. A bit like Town & Country.

Snort.
