New author for relative who likes Bernard Cornwall and Wilbur Smith

I have a relative who loves the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwall and anything by Wilbur Smith and I would like to introduce them to new authors as they have completed the works by these two.

Something swashbuckling but with gun powder rather than swords sort of thing. I am totally lost on this so would appreciate a steer. TIA

Action thriller writers of the past:
Hammond Innes
Alistair Mclean
Desmond Bagley

Dick Francis (action thriller with horse-racing)

Clive Cussler ?

The Dirk Pitt series are good thrillers
NUMA series is about marine agency

There are other series too so worth looking at ?

Thanks very much for these suggestions, I just remembered (the film) Master &Commander and saw it is based on a book by Patrick O Brien, does that seem like a good fit?

The Master and Commander series is set in the same period as Sharpe. There are a couple of dozen of them so should keep them going for a while.

The 70s equivalent is probably Alexander Kent - character Richard Bolitho.

Has your relative read any Flashman? he buckles his swash quite a bit Grin

Oh, got distracted by Flashman. (as you do)

H is quite a fan of the Kydd series by Julian Stockwin, also set in the Napoleonic wars. I haven't read any of those.

I did quite enjoy the two Patrick O'Brian books I read - I have a low tolerance for Technical Ropes which is why I haven't gone any further. Liked the characters, couple of interesting women.

Conn Igguldon - The Gates of Rome series

Love Flashman! Thanks for all your suggestions, so helpful!

Has your relative read the US War Civil War (1860s) series by Cornwell, The second is Copperhead. Can't remember other titles. About the best for giving the idea of the real feeling of war.
Also interesting are the Garry Douglas Killworth books set in Crimean war 1850s featuring a Sergeant 'Fancy' Jack Crossman. No gloss there either.

brianixon · 26/04/2022 14:57

Short Stories by Kipling: 'Soldiers Three' and 'Plain Tales from the Hills'. Set when written, so late 1870s to mid 1880s I think.

Patrick O'Brian - The Jack Aubrey series. 20 books which really do lend themselves for multiple reads (circumnavigations for the passionate and friendly fanbase).

Quite a lot of companion books too including the wonderful Lobscouse and Spotted Dog cook book which researches the food from the series.

@PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn

I have the collection of his Rome books and the Emperor series. I first got into the one about Genghis Khan and really loved it!
