11/22/63

A man finds a portal back to the 60s, and tries to prevent the assassination of Kennedy. When he goes back in time the world he finds just seems so real and detailed, it's amazing, so well done. The characters are also good, and he's obviously done his historical research. Very poignant too
There's a LOT less horror than in a typical King book, but that suits me, as although I love his imagination, I'm a bit squeamish, so don't really enjoy gory extreme horror.

Tbh most of his stuff is good, especially the older stuff. His pieces in the last few years haven't been as strong .

The Stand (Complete and Un-cut Edition)
Cell
The Dome (the end is abysmal, but I enjoyed the rest)
11/22/63
None of these can really be construed as horror, but I’m really not into having to keep the lights on when I’m trying to sleep 😁

Kanaloa · 17/10/2021 03:12

Ooh tricky. My favourite is ‘It’ but I wouldn’t recommend it for a starter novel because it’s massively long. Still my favourite but it could be a slog.

Dolores Claiborne is an underrated gem. I first read it age 11 on a school trip, I bought it on the ferry. I remember tucking the front cover back as I read because I was sure my teacher would have it in the confiscated pile ASAP if she saw me with it.

Also Misery.

Kanaloa · 17/10/2021 03:13

What I meant about It was if you haven’t read Stephen King and you’re not sure you like him then you might not want to slog through a really long novel. It’s a fantastic book though, so I would recommend it if you like getting really lost in a long story. Also a choice of adaptations for once you’ve finished, but they will probably annoy you if you love the book!

Bachman Books. The Running Man is brilliant.

Virtually all of his early works.

Under the Dome is however garbage.

clarepetal · 21/11/2021 18:49

Just finished reading 11.22.63. It's the third time I've read it, and it's brilliant

StorytimeSasha · 08/05/2022 15:19

The Stand for an epic, brilliant novel.

' Different Seasons ' to start of with though. Four novellas, two of which were made into the films 'Shawshank Redemption' and 'Stand By Me'.

Tlollj · 08/05/2022 15:24

The Shining
Misery
Pet Cemetery
Green Mile
Carrie
All the early ones, the late ones are a bit science fiction for me.
