Hi. My sister is a teacher; Head of Department in a secondary school. She is aware that certain teachers - mainly those who live alone - are struggling a bit at this time, and she is looking to set up a sort of virtual social committee.
As part of this, she'd like to form a book group for those who'd like to join in. She has asked for my help in choosing their first title. It would have to be a book that would appeal to both genders, a wide-ish age range, from professor types to non-bookish, outdoorsy types.
Having had long Covid, I'm a bit out of touch with reading, as I can't focus on much more than Netflix currently!
I'm thinking a 'safe' bet, something that is either a bit upbeat in this current climate, or else very gripping.
Any ideas?
Thanks Smile

That sounds like a lovely idea. A film club might also be a good idea. Or a watch along tv series?

This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay might be good. Short, mainly humorous, dairy entries from an ex-junior dr/consultant. Language and writing style are easily accessible and the diary entries mean snippets can be read in short time bursts.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman might fit the bill- an excellent read

Going against the brief, I’d perhaps go for something short enough not to be too much of a chore but a bit more challenging/offbeat?

Candide? Flatland? A Room of One’s Own? Maybe Gatsby if not everyone has read it already?

Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession is really very upbeat indeed. It’s short and quite unusual, so even people who found it dull could enjoy discussing what sort of book it’s meant to be.
