I normally love to read but am struggling with picking up any book! Books I have read and loved were Dear Mrs Bird, Where the crawdads sing, 9 perfect strangers and rain birds. Books that I thought were ok were the lido, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine and the Cactus. I’m currently trying to read Circe and am really struggling to get past page 10! So please give me your best recommendations 😀

There's only one novel you need right now. It will make things seem less bad.

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel.

(There's at least one thread on it but - spoilers!)

You can thank me afterwards! BrewCake

A Fine Balance by Rohan Mistry
Best book I’ve ever read

Solomaliar · 08/04/2020 10:25

I like to read historical novels. The latest one I've read is Forbidden Queen. I could'n brake away from the book until I've finished it.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/04/2020 11:02

The dry by Jane Harper for a murder mystery

The momentum of lift by Melinda Gates for some inspiration

Heygirlheyboy · 08/04/2020 11:04

Education by Tara Westover. Fantastic.

Whiskeyjayze · 08/04/2020 11:46

Thank you for these! I will hold off on station 11 for now but it is on my list. I will look at the others, I have already read Educated and loved it. I read it whilst at Imperial and it definitely improved my learning ethic and stopped me lazying around as much 😂

The Dry is great yes.

Lefkosia · 08/04/2020 11:53

Oh I came here to recommend Circe - I think it's a fantastic book but maybe a bit slow to get going. I'd recommend persevering with it for a bit longer and see if it gets more enjoyable. I liked it so much I've read it multiple times

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewel - I literally couldn’t put it down.

Jonb6 · 08/04/2020 11:59

The Light between Oceans is beautifully written and an unusual story. The Dry by Jane Harper was very enjoyable as was The Lost Man both set in Australia.

Larchfield by Polly Clark?

PumpkinWitch · 30/12/2020 21:36

Books I have loved this year:

Everyone Brave is Forgiven- a world war 2 Romance.

House of Glass by Hadley Freeman is lovely but really sad as it is about her family’s experience in the Holocaust.

Pull of the Stars by Emma Donohugh is beautiful too but set in 1919 during the last Spanish flu pandemic on a maternity ward.

None of the are that cheery but I was gripped.

Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh. A "who done it", crime fiction book.
You will not be able to put it down!!!!

SpanielPlusToddler · 03/01/2021 23:07

The Giver of Stars, I loved it.

I’ve just finished shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart and still recovering!

It’s a bit brutal in parts but it’s a book that will stay with me for a long time.

Raspberrysins · 25/01/2021 21:24

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. It’s easy to get into and sort of life changing!

EssexLioness · 25/01/2021 21:32

Agree with The Midnight Library. Loved it and got me back into reading again after a dry spell

nursejekyll · 25/01/2021 21:33

I've recently read and enjoyed 'The New Wilderness' by Diane Cook which was a great read. Was sad to finish it and immediately ordered a book of short stories by the same author.

Also '10 minutes and 38 seconds in This Strange World' is fantastic.

YakkityYakYakYak · 25/01/2021 21:44

Another vote for midnight library. I read this book at exactly the time I needed to read it. Highly recommended

I have just finished The Fear, by Mark Cunnington. It's a brilliant and emotional book, based on his real experiences with scary things happening to different family members. Definitely recommend it and was a great little Amazon discovery.
