Men B vaccine before September start?

Is anyone doing a private Men B jab before starting school in September? I know it is definitely advised for uni but obviously boarding school is not dissimilar? School just says ‘parental choice’ but no recommendation either way. Thanks

I did for my kids, got it done in Boots, will have to for uni anyway next year.

They need 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart so better get booking!

Ok, so are other parents also doing it at your schools? Any view from the schools?

Our son was born in 2013. We did a private men B vaccination in 2015 and he has a top up next week ahead of starting boarding senior school in September.

thank you, we can’t remember whether ours had it or not so I guess a top up would be a good idea by now.

Out of interest would you have done it if he had been going to day school?

I did for mine who has just finished first year at uni- her friend had men b in sixth form and it was too close to home to take the risk at uni

@678socks is your DC going into Y7 or Y9
in September? If Y7, it’s quite likely they had it (unless they are old for their year - my DC was a March baby and had it). If Y9, no they wouldn’t as part of the standard schedule.
I would be getting it in your shoes.

Yes, we're huge fans of vaccinations - have paid for him to have chicken pox and polio ones, too, on top of all of the NHS scheduled ones.

Yes we paid for chicken pox too. Y7.

In Australia there’s currently a catch up program of meningococcal vaccinations for teenagers in Yr 10. That’s about 15yo. DD just had hers and it was MenB and Men ACWY. She’ll need a second MenB in 8 weeks. One of the vaccines is newly provided for free in some states in Australia. Not sure it’s B or ACWY. Based on that yes I’d be getting your DS vaccinated for MenB. Here MenB is also given to babies and toddlers as free standard childhood vaccinations.

Why would you pay for polio vaccine? It’s included in all the primary NHS immunisations.

There was a London booster a couple of years ago and our son was not in the radius for it. Similarly, we're a couple of miles outside an NHS TB vaccination program but we haven't paid for that one.
