Brighton College vs Harrow

DS has offers from a few schools including
Brighton College and Harrow (and on the waiting list of Eton) . Two very different schools. DS is not very sporty but keen to play sports daily and will participate in all sports to varying levels , generally average. He is keen on music, drama and academically quite strong.

We are leaning more towards Harrow at present for many reasons including distance from home and very eager to get views from those who
have knowledge or some experience or information about either that could guide us please. Thank you

Sounds like your DC will do well at either school.

Other than location, main differences IMO (which I’m sure you are aware of)

  1. co-ed vs single sex
  2. some boarding vs 100% boarding
  3. highly academic vs broader range of intake

we didn’t apply to BC due to the points I mention as we wanted boys only full boarding

Depends if you think your DS would strive in a broader academic intake or on an exceptionally academic school. BC is the best of the best but that brings its issues for pupils who need a gentler pace/environment. Don’t underestimate distance. I would go for the closest one to home.
Congrats to him for securing great offers.

Harrow tends to be slightly more "traditional" in tone while Brighton is known as a very "progressive" school.

Harrow has a high number of Asian students whereas Brighton tends to be slightly more British and the international students are more mixed.

If he got into Brighton, he will likely get into Eton in due course. Lots of boys get in via B list.

We didn’t opt for Brighton as it’s not a full boarding school in the traditions sense: there isn’t any Saturday school so there is more likelihood that pupils will go home at the weekends and those left in will mainly be international. The facilities look very nice however. It would be a great option if you lived close by and wanted your child to come home every weekend.

BC has a reputation for managing out kids who aren’t performing strongly academically and/or asking them to take exams “off the books” so it doesn’t affect their statistics. It also has been known to use pressure to get negative comments about it removed from MN. I wouldn’t touch any school like that.

We know both schools very well. They are completely different institutions. Its difficult to see how a DS, or the parents, would match the profile of both. Brighton is of course co-ed, weekly boarding, no Saturday lessons, extremely progressive/uber liberal/woke (delete as appropriate) and Harrow remains all boys/conformist/full boarding/Saturday lessons/historically established. BC is a huge self promoter of itself, some would say brash. A lot of parents find the constant self promotion a bit crass but it has fabulous teachers and produces stellar academic results. But at what cost to the DC's school experience and mental health? With no Saturday lessons and weekly boarding, meaning that it has to cram a huge amount of work into those 5 days, and with the absolute certainty that they will manage out DC if there is a sniff that their lofty league table position maybe under threat, one has to wonder whether that's a healthy environment for the children. The entry assessment process is not as challenging, and is broader than many would think. We have seen averagely academic DC gain places.
As has been well discussed on these threads, Harrow is now hugely reliant on its international, particularly East asian co hort of pupils to maintain its academic standards and this has affected the cultural environment of the school.
