That is what I also think but I would like to get information from the current parents and understand what is actually happening and to what degree the children can get support to do further? For example if you have 12 sets for maths it means every sets have 20 pupils and doing do same work even if you are in the top sets?

@Calculusa i am sure it will be the same as what happens at my son’s school , you are in sets according to your ability you all do the same curriculum top set do it in more depth and at a faster speed .
we have several boys in top set doing GCSE maths and beyond, they will be given different papers for exams .

tbh Eton know what they are doing there is no need to worry about the teaching ,

I can promise that the 16 or so maths sets don't do the same work and that in the top few sets the work is years ahead of the curriculum. They are also excellent at moving DC between sets; mine started in set 5 of one stream, and was moved to set 3 after the first half term and set 1 after the second half term. That set was effectively set 3 overall because most of the KSs happened to be in the other stream in F block . Over the years it juggled around a bit but the top two sets went deeper at a ferocious rate; there is absolutely no way your son won't be challenged if he's up to that pace.

@NeedingCoffee you took the words right out of my mouth , I would naturally think that’s the way it works but I wasn’t in any position to clarify . There are some seriously smart boys at Eton they are very used to having lots of boys to that standard .

Yes, I had a tour and asked some of my questions 😊I will also have another one. I am not worrying about teaching but that is reassuring to hear from current parents because it is also difficult to make decision about school choices.

which school your DS in currently. It sounds a very good one.

The school will absolutely ensure that every boy fulfils his potential, and that he is being properly challenged. He may be in the top set for some subjects and bottom set for others. HMs and tutors will absolutely make sure they are busy with as wide a range of activities as possible, that they try new things to challenge themselves as well as continue with sports/instruments they are good at. They like boys to contribute fully and are kept occupied - this includes some downtime too.

Just a heads up, over fussy, pushy parents are a big turn off when it comes to choosing houses...

It is very reassuring to hear that the children can get enough challenge and balance the time to do sports, music and other interests. That is what I want for my son.

Do you have any advice on choosing houses.

TonTonMacoute · 11/03/2026 21:43

As I have said on other Eton threads it is really not worth while getting too over invested in house choice - parents do not choose the house, HMs choose the boys.

I wish you and your son the best of luck with entry to this amazing school.

@TonTonMacoute i think we need to be offered the place before we think about Houses .

Agree. I think a lot of people imagine it's a pampered and soft environment, it's much more complex than that.

For example, there has been quite a lot in the press recently about bullying chefs. DS (who left 9 years ago!!) is now working in a Michelin starred restaurant and the chef isn't a bully, but he can certainly let rip under pressure. Five years at Eton was a perfect preparation to deal with these outbursts 😀

Are you asking for bursaries or tranche 1?
I think the bursary group got their offers last week.
My son is in tranche 1 and we have not heard anything yet.

Nicha · 18/03/2026 14:45

My son is also in tranche 1 and we haven’t received any email yet.
Just wondering if anyone in tranche 1 has heard anything from Eton so far.
