Kent boarding schools

I am moving back to France next summer but my daughter will be remaining in the UK and attending boarding school. She will be starting Year 7 in 2026.
We are currently in Wales and we are looking in Kent so it will be easier for her to travel home to France. But there are so many schools there and I am already worried about her going to boarding school that I am worried about choosing the wrong one and could do with any insight anybody is able to give.
We have booked some open days and currently considering:
Dover College
Kent College
Kings
St Lawrence
Cranbrook
Beneden
She is horse and animal mad so somewhere with a good equestrian link would be perfect. She's not particularly sporty but loves the arts and STEM. She's a very gentle character and I'm terrified about her being bullied. She's not a proficient French speaker and I haven't discounted international schools in France but I want to exhaust our UK options first.

A little east of Kent (but close) is Woldingham who have equestrian teams and riding clubs so also worth a look

Dover College is lovely and the most convenient travel wise but not sure re equestrian but a very friendly welcoming place. Kings has a junior school but doesn’t start till Year 9 but the junior kings would be a gentler start.

What are your longer term plans? Clearly it would be really disruptive for your DD to move to France but, if you are planning a permanent move there, I think I would be worried that she won’t ever put down any roots herself in France if she isn’t at school there and doesn’t learn to speak the language properly. I also think she might begin to resent coming home for the school
holidays as she won’t have any local friends and may struggle to make any and engage in local services if she doesn’t speak the language with a degree of fluency.

What about Mayfield? It's just over the border from Kent into East Sussex. I went there a million years ago and it still seems to have strong equestrian links.

Mayfield Equestrian - Boarding School Equestrian Programme

In Mayfield's Equestrian Department, we pride ourselves in supporting girls to achieve their equestrian goals alongside their academic goals. Learn more!

Seconding the Mayfield Girls suggestion. It is well known for being a nurturing, happy place with great pastoral care. The Ceramics department is amazing and your daughter would also have Textiles lessons in addition to Art throughout Lower School. My daughter isn’t involved in the equestrian side but her friends who are appear to be thriving.

Another for Mayfield girls if equestrian. Friends with dds there who are horse mad all love it.

Mayfield is East Sussex. Not far from Kent, but quite a lot further from France than the East Kent schools. Depending on where you will be living and your preferred form of transport, if either stick to East Kent or near Gatwick in West Sussex. King’s is a boarding school with day pupils, whereas most are now day schools with boarders, which can make weekends lonely. Northbourne Park is a boarding prep school, which would provide two years of nurturing boarding before going to a bigger senior school. It also has exceptional French teaching, which might help open up options for 13+.

Let me save you a small fortune. Look at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover. Probably better than all bar one of the above mentioned and as a state boarding school it’s £22k per year. Brilliant facilities, small class sizes, excellent teachers and has just been awarded outstanding in all areas for their boarding and welfare.
Do not let the military part of the name put you off. The military part is about ethos, not military school in the way US military schools are.

Oh, and there is an equestrian club. They use a local stables.
Arts and STEM also v good.
You must take a look as you will not believe the ‘bang for your buck’.

Benenden is also meant to be very good pastorally but is not a big equestrian school. However, I understand the new headmistress would like horses on site so this may change. I think students ride off site as a club. Maybe others can offer more insight on Benenden as an option? They are also meant to be good at STEM. We are considering it for DD too. If you are oversees the fact that it's more of a fully boarding school might appeal as your dd wouldn't be lonely at weekends.

Another vote for Mayfield. The culture is very caring and supportive plus the stables are within school grounds no more than 5 min walk from the dining hall. The wellness centre is brand new and a concept that I had not seen elsewhere at this level - it’s like their own mini-Chiva Som. The only drawback is that the middle school’s boarding facilities could be improved. They had a new head join last year. Mayfield’s arts is top notch, the best I have seen at any school. However if your DD’s interest includes acting please note that Mayfield does not own its own theatre (it uses one in Tunbridge Wells). [Our DD does not attend Mayfield but it was a very close decision. If we wanted her to go to school in that region then Mayfield would have been our top pick.]

Regarding Benenden, they use two stables regularly one of which is literally next to the school. That said, the culture is not very horsey whereas Mayfield’s culture has a strong equestrian side. Benenden is a much larger school than Mayfield. My guess would be the STEM is stronger at Benenden.

sorry but I don’t know the other schools you mentioned, OP. That said, I know someone whose DD attends St Lawrence and she loves it. Apparently St Lawrence is also a school with a very caring culture.
